As the light aircraft ends your taxi on the landing strip near the safari lodge, it is customary for your guide to be there to greet you. On all my safaris in six southern and eastern African countries, these guides were men. But getting into Mahali Mzuri, Sir Richard Branson & # 39;s Virgin Limited Edition Accommodation in southern Kenya, in the famous Maasai Mara, everything was different. First, the aircraft belonging to the charter company Scenic Aerial Safaris, a Cessna Grand Caravan & nbsp; with swivel leather seats, was way above the usual safari transportation. And the guide who waited near the runway for the open vehicle was the sweet and good-natured Betty Maitai, a member of the Maasai tribe and one of the few, but growing, female guides in Kenya.

It is not easy for anyone to become a safari guide in Africa, but going against the traditional roles here at the Maasai Mara for a woman was certainly a challenge. However, you have an immediate notion of Betty's knowledge and determination, whether you are obtaining repeated visions of a mother and calf chicks, lions, elephants, zebras, giraffes, or navigating the uneven terrain in search of them. Attractive and kind, she also shares details of her education and family, conveying illuminating aspects of the Maasai culture as well as her knowledge of wildlife. She is also a patient tutor in the local language.

Going on safari with Betty is one of the main reasons to go to Mahali Mzuri, but not the only one. The location within the Olare Motorogi Conservancy offers wildlife viewing throughout the year and proximity to the Great Migration, in which millions of wildebeest, zebras and other antelope move between the Tanzania Serengeti and the Maasai Mara; the best months of viewing in Kenya are late June to October.

The intimate inn has 12 spacious tents considered among the most luxurious of the region. The meals are creative, with dishes such as a Middle Eastern mezze dish for lunch, and roasted chops with barbecue sauce and grilled shrimp with Swahili curry sauce for dinner. While at breakfast on the deck, elephants strolling through the bush are a common sight. & E during the afternoons between lunch and afternoon walks, there is a 39-foot pool to cool off and the masterful Vera for massages.

For those who want to explore more deeply the Maasai culture, accommodation can arrange visits to a local Maasai village or Mara North Conservancy& nbsp; to learn about conservation efforts within the region in cooperation with the Maasai landowners. Then, late in the afternoon, you return to Betty's vehicle in search of other wildlife and the usual cocktail as the sun goes down. Nothing beats an African sunset.
