Will Smith: Durham Batsman Announces Retirement

Will Smith captained Durham when he won the County Championship for the second time in 2009

The Durham batsman, Will Smith, retired from cricket at age 36.

Smith, a county champion on three occasions with Nottinghamshire and Durham, has only made an appearance in Division Two this year.

He returned to Chester-le-Street in 2018 after four seasons with Hampshire.

"Due to the lack of opportunities and the willingness to see the young Durham players have as many chances as possible, I can say that now is absolutely the right time," he said.

"I gave it all as a player I can possibly give."

Smith had an average of 32.78 in 183 first-class games, marking 18 centuries.
