Google Camera on Pixel 4 can scan documents, translate and copy text

When Google announced Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL last month, there were many new features that the company chose not to mention at the Made by Google event. New features like Screen Attention, Pixel Themes, Car Crash Detection, and more have never been announced, but can be found on the latest Pixel smartphones. However, there is one feature in particular that we didn't see much attention: improved Google Lens suggestions in the Google Camera app. In fact, we talked about this in our summary of “Google Pixel 4 – What the speech” Made by Google didn't say! ”” But I wanted to highlight this feature because, as I said, it wasn't mentioned online much.

By context, Google Lens is a tool that uses computer vision to analyze what you are seeing. It was announced on Google I / O 2017 with features such as the ability to identify what kind of flower you are seeing, extract information from a restaurant you are viewing, or recognize Wi-Fi network entry credentials. Since its debut, Google Lens has received updates to suggest clothing, recognize artwork by local artists, scan restaurant menus, overlay translated texts, and do other cool stuff.

To access Google Lens on most smartphones, you can go to Google Assistant and touch the Lens shortcut, open any photo in Google Photos and touch the Lens shortcut, or launch the dedicated Google Lens app (which is just a shortcut). ). On Pixel smartphones, the Google Camera app has a dedicated shortcut to launch Google Lens. However, starting with Pixel 3, Google Lens runs in real time on the Google camera display. This integration, called Google Lens Suggestions, enables the Google Camera app to detect URLs, email addresses, and business cards.

With the new Pixel 4, Google Lens suggestions can also offer you to scan documents, translate text, or copy text. When you hover over something that looks like a document, you'll see a chip with the Google Lens icon and the text "scan document". Tapping this option opens Google Lens with automatically set corners to crop the document. After cropping the document, you can share it as a PDF or image. As for the translation feature, we are told that it only supports English, Spanish, German, Hindi and Japanese at the moment.

Here are the screenshots showing each of these features:

These enhanced lens suggestions do not appear to be available on older Pixel smartphones. When the feature debuted in Pixel 3, Google said it used Pixel Visual Core to provide real-time suggestions. These new suggestions may be based on the updated Pixel Neural Core Pixel 4. However, we are confident that Google's talented camera modification community will offer a way to force this feature to work on older, possibly Pixel smartphones. by downloading the suggestions to the main SoC.
