FC Platinum 0
FC PLATINUM celebrated the memorable second consecutive title of the Castle lager Premier Soccer Premier League after beating Shabanie Mine 1-0 at Maglas Stadium on Sunday.
Former Dynamos and CAPS United midfielder Devon Chafa scored the only goal of the match in the 19th minute of the second half and secured three points for the Zvishavane platinum miners to enter the game needing at least one point defend your title.
The win over the city's rivals took the number of points in the Platinum season to 74 points in 32 matches, nine ahead of runner-up Ngezi Platinum with two games remaining in the season.
Ngezi Platinum beat Bulawayo Chiefs 2-0 in their other game at Boabab Stadium in Mhondoro, though it was not enough to prevent FC Platinum from maintaining their dominance in Zimbabwean football.
Ngezi needed to collect maximum points along with a loss of FC Platinum to keep the title race alive.
FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza, who became the first local coach to win four straight titles in a row, was delighted after organizing another successful campaign for the ambitious Zvishavane club.
"Today we played for two results, a win or a draw, but fortunately we won a victory. So, congratulations to the boys for a job well done, "Mapeza told reporters during the post-match press conference.
"Since the start of the season, our goal was to defend the title and it was a difficult road, but several stakeholders were supporting us.
"I want to greet our supporters, the executive, the players, the technical staff and my family for always being there for me along this journey.
"In the end, all the glory goes to God for seeing us to this day."
The former Warriors coach said he is now eyeing the 80-point mark at the end of the season, winning his remaining two games.
"If you look at our progress since 2014, we are improving little by little and I have talked to the boys with the goal of achieving the 80-point mark. So we will continue to push to achieve this goal because we are within reach, "said Mapeza.
Meanwhile, in other games played on Sunday, two first-half goals from goalkeeper Ariel Sibanda Tinashe Makanda earned the Highlanders a 2-0 win over Harare in Barbourfields.
Makanda opened the scoring at 26º minute with a brilliant attack from out of the box before being knocked into the box 10 minutes later to win his hand a penalty that was converted by Sibanda.
Elsewhere Dynamos and Triangle United drew 1-1 at Rufaro, while CAPS United defeated Mutare City Rovers 1-0 at Vengere in Rusape.
