(Caracas, November 25. News24) – Images of people who feel disgusted or dislike an individual who is smoking can cause smokers to get rid of this habit that is harmful to their health, according to a study published this week in the Journal of Consumer Affairs.
In an experiment, researchers at the University of Western Ontario (Canada) decided to replace illustrations of the harmful effects of tobacco on the body that appear on cigarette packs, through pictures of people's facial expressions.
The survey involved 156 smokers, who were shown two packages with the same motto ("That's how people see smokers"), but with different illustrations. In the first, the pack of cigarettes was illustrated with an image of people with a neutral facial expression, while in the second, people showed disgust.
The experiment revealed that, on seeing the second picture, smokers felt embarrassed and showed an interest in quitting smoking.
In addition, The authors emphasize that this method may not be wholly ethical, as it may cause additional stress among those who can not stop smoking. For this reason, they suggest that more studies are needed in this regard.
