Scientifically confirmed: Facebook and Instagram induce depression

Spending a lot of time on social networks increases the feeling of loneliness and causes depression, according to new research published in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology. 143 students participated actively in the experiment that served as the basis for the work Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. First, the scientists conducted a survey to identify the mood and well-being of the volunteers and also measured the average time of their presence on social networks with the help of statistics provided by the iPhone.

Subsequently, students were divided into two groups. In the first, which served as a control group, the students dedicated themselves to social networks as long as normally. The members of the second group, the experimental group, did not use more than ten minutes a day on each of the social networks. The experiment lasted three weeks.

After the experiment, the psychologists prepared a special questionnaire for the volunteers with seven indicators: social support, fear of isolation from the environment, loneliness, anxiety, depression, self-esteem and self-acceptance.

Well, the study found that loneliness and depression depend directly on of the time we spend on social networks. In addition, all members of the experimental group showed less depression symptoms than the members of the control group.

One of the authors, Melissa G. Hunt, says that "less attention to social networks makes us feel less alone."
