Ford v Ferrari tells the true story of the ultimate automotive rivalry. Matt Damon plays Carroll Shelby and Christian Bale as Ken Miles, but in fact they are on the same side. Shelby designs racing cars for Ford and Miles drives the Shelby GT40. They face current Le Mans champion Enzo Ferrari in the 1966 race.
Bale and Damon may be teaming up to face Ferrari in the film, but in the spirit of friendly competition, Showbiz tricks Damon x Bale to see who wins. Ford v Ferrari. Spoilers for Ford v Ferrari below.
Matt Damon builds the car, Christian Bale drives the car
There may be no Ford v Ferrari without Carroll Shelby to build the GT40. Some of the most exciting scenes in the movie are when the team makes adjustments, tries them out and modifies them again. Matt Damon is leading these scenes as a mentor and innovator.
The car itself is just a tool. You still need a driver to navigate the race and work on the vehicle. Ken Miles is the driver and Christian Bale receive all the racing action scenes. Bale can win this round.
Matt Damon is the team player, Christian Bale is the wildcard
Ken Miles never played the game or practiced basic diplomacy. He is expelled from a race early on for speaking with an officer. Ford executives don't like him, especially Leo Beebe (Josh Lucas) and that's a good drama. He's the best, but it makes his bosses resent him.
Carroll Shelby could keep the team together and keep the money happy. It's a very important skill, but it's much more fun to watch Ken Miles attack. Another point for Christian Bale.
They really fight in the movie
When Ken Miles is suspended from the team, his replacement pilot loses and Shelby returns with his tail between his legs. Miles does not accept Shelby's gracious apology and sticks it in his nose. They fight on the floor and destroy a bag of groceries in the process.
Hardly Batman Vs Bourne. These are not trained fighters and it is not a serious fight. Let's call it a draw.
Matt Damon also has some tricks up his sleeve
Ken Miles let everyone know exactly what he was thinking. He kept no secrets and never bit his tongue. Carroll Shelby had ways of messing with people when they didn't even know what hit them.
He locks Leo Beebe in his office so he could spend time alone with Henry Ford II. He was loosening the nuts in the Ferrari team pit to think he had the car lost a part. Sometimes subtlety wins, so Matt Damon wins here.
And the winner is: Christian Bale
Christian Bale is the MVP of Ford v Ferrari although fair, he wins by the nose. He gets the fun showboat character and he delivers. Props to Matt Damon for reigning to play the more reserved Carroll Shelby.
