Tesla has started promoting a new software update on its Full Self-Driving Beta program and CEO Elon Musk said it could already reduce driver interventions by a third.
It has been less than two weeks since Tesla started launching the first version of its “Full Self-Driving” feature in beta for some users.
As we reported earlier, Tesla has already collected a large amount of data from its test fleet and is now using it to improve the system.
Yesterday, Tesla started pushing a new software update 2020.40.8.12 for owners with the ealry access FSD beta and they have been reporting a smoother experience with AI’s steering ability.
CEO Elon Musk used Twitter to say that the update could reduce driver interventions by up to 33%:
“We measured this mainly on the likelihood of intervention. This update addressed several problems, resulting in perhaps around 1/3 less intervention. Many of the improvements consist of fixing silly bugs in relation to grand eureka moments. True to most beta versions in my experience. “
As we reported earlier, although Tesla calls the system “Full Auto Steering,” it is actually necessary for the driver to keep his hands on the wheel and be ready to take control.
Tesla can learn from these interventions to help improve its neural networks in future updates.
Musk says the automaker plans to release new updates every 5 to 10 days, leading to the broader launch of the Full Self-Driving beta in the US later this year.
The CEO warns that the errors will never reach zero, but Tesla’s hope is that they will become low enough to be safer than humans and therefore they will be able to remove the driver’s supervision constraint:
“Failures will never be zero, but at some point the probability of failure will be much less than that of the average human being.”
Musk had previously said that Tesla could achieve this goal by the end of 2020, but now it seems that this is unlikely to happen with the FSD Beta only scheduled for a broader release in December and that version should still depend heavily on the attention of the driver .
