The 17-year-old Formula 3 driver Sophia Floersch suffered a fractured spine in a crash at the Macau Grand Prix.
The Van Amersfoort Racing rider lost control of the Lisbon curve before flying over the barriers and into a photographer's bunker.
A statement from Floersch's Twitter team confirmed that the German was "aware" and her vital signs were "stable", while later she went to the social networking site to give an update on her condition.
"I just wanted everyone to know I'm fine, but I'm going to have surgery tomorrow morning" Floersch wrote on Twitter. "Thanks to @fia and @ hwaag – official @ MercedesAMGF1 who are taking great care of me. Thank you all for the messages of support. Please update soon.
Japanese driver Sho Tsuboi, with whom Floersch collided, was taken to the hospital with back pain. The organizers of the race confirmed two photographers and a marshal was also at the hospital.
Punch Daniel Ticktum led the race when he was stopped.
