Measles outbreak at Clark Co. grows to 16 confirmed, 5 suspected cases

Health officials said they had two additional measles cases in Clark County, bringing the total to 16 confirmed cases since the beginning of the year.

They are also investigating five more suspected cases of the infection.

Most confirmed cases involve children less than 10 years of age, however, three cases involve children between the ages of 11 and 18 years.

Those who are infected have visited various public places while they were infecting them, including Portland International Airport, IKEA, and various health facilities and schools. (full list below)

Fourteen of the infected were not immunized, while two others did not receive the vaccine.

"Measles can be so contagious that you may be in a room, and if you are susceptible, two hours after someone with measles left and still gets the disease," said Alan Melnick, director of public health in Clark County. .

If you or your child show signs of measles, contact your doctor before going so they can limit exposure of anyone else in the waiting room.

Multnomah County Health said they have not had confirmed cases yet, but said there is a risk of exposure.

"Most people are immunized but again measles has a way of finding people who are not. It is the most contagious human disease we know," said Paul Lewis of Multnomah County Health.

Dr. Lewis says that if you have a child under one year of age and you are worried, you can talk to your doctor about getting the vaccine sooner. You should also check with any day care center that your child attends to ensure they require their staff to be up to date with immunizations.
