McDonald's will shrink its menu late at night, cut chicken sandwiches and salads

McDonald's is shrinking its late-night menu.

As of April 30, Signature Crafted Recipes, Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Buttermilk Crispy Chicken Sandwich, Buttermilk Crispy Tenders, Filet-O-Fish and premium salads will not be available from midnight to 5:00 a.m., the chain of restaurants.

"Let's simplify what's served after midnight so customers can get the most popular favorites," said Andrea Abate, a McDonald's spokeswoman.

Other nightly menu items, including Big Macs, Quarter Pounders and McNuggets, will still be available.

The Business Insider first reported the planned changes.

McDonald's wants to reduce the "complexity" of menus and store operations, Chief Financial Officer Kevin Ozan told analysts at a conference last month. He added that the company's new additions – breakfast, fresh beef and premium sandwiches – "have created slightly slower drive-thru times."

McDonald's has also raised menu prices 2 percent recently to combat rising costs.

Meanwhile, the company is expanding its breakfast menu – an important meal for fast food chains. McDonald's presented the Donut Sticks in February. The new item is only available during breakfast hours, although the company will serve other breakfast items throughout the day.
