UPDATE: The vast majority of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival's programming was revealed this morning in Paris with such long-awaited names as Pedro Almodovar (Pain and Glory), Terrence Malick (A hidden life) and Ken Loach (Sorry, we missed you.) in the mix – see below the original post for the complete list. At the same time, there is still no confirmation of the anticipation of Quentin Tarantino Once upon a time in Hollywood – still. Fest boss Thierry Frémaux said he is not ready yet, but hopes to add it. What he saw of the period film is "magnificent."
Overall, there were few surprises, but among the twists here on the Champs-Elysées this morning, there are four female directors in Competition, most of all recent years. They include Jessica Hausner from Little joe and Céline Sciamma de Portrait of a lady on fire.
Cannes: "Magnificent" by Quentin Tarantino, "Once upon a time in Hollywood", do not enter today's lineup, but there is still a chance
We also learned this morning that Elton John will be on hand for the world premiere of Paramount. Rocket man, which Deadline previously confirmed for a slot on May 16. Alfonso Cuaron will also be on the Riviera to present a restored version of Stanley Kubrick. The brightness – and, according to Frémaux, "leave" with his friend Alejandro G Inarritu, who is the president of the jury in Cannes this year.
See below for the full list of titles announced today, including the Competition, Out of Competition, Special Screenings and Un Certain Regard (more films will certainly be added in the next few days) and return for more news and our review of Cannes, Vintage 2019.
PREVIOUS, 1:57 AM PT: The schedule for the 72nd Cannes Film Festival is being unveiled this morning at the UGC Normandie Theater here on the Champs-Elysées in Paris. There are already a handful of titles that are among the official selections that Fest boss Thierry Frémaux will announce today, while he may also have some surprises up his sleeve and is likely to have a few pieces back to be added in the coming weeks. before the Riviera promenade begins on May 14.
The festival previously announced that Jim Jarmusch's zombie horror comedy The dead do not die, of Focus, has honors of opening in the competition. And as Deadline previously confirmed, Paramount's Elton John musical fantasy film Rocket man will take off on May 16. Alejandro G Inarritu is the president of this year's jury, which, as always, has been the target of speculation.
You can watch live for the first time in English, below:
We do not expect to hear any of the listed Netflix or Amazon features, marking the first time in four years without a movie from any of the streamers. However, as Deadline reported, at least one episode of the Amazon series of Nicolas Winding Refn Too old to die young is looking at a special slot.
Perhaps the biggest question, which may not be answered this morning, is whether Quentin Tarantino Once upon a time in Hollywood should debut on May 21. This would mark 25 years for the day since pulp Fiction impressed the Croisette before winning Palme d'Or. Sony's title has been very well priced in Cannes, but let's see if Frémaux gives up the merchandise today.
Elsewhere, Terrence Malick of A hidden life (formerly entitled Radegundo) is expected, as well as that of Pedro Almodóvar Pain and GloryBong Joon-ho Parasite and Ken Loach Sorry, we missed you.among many others. Céline Sciamma Portrait of a lady on fire and the English language of Alice Winocour Next have also been commented.
