Shortly after winning his second Oscar, Mahershala Ali embarked on the independent science fiction film "Sovereign."
Entertainment One will produce alongside 21 Laps Entertainment, Shawn Levy, Dan Levine and Dan Cohen. The trio recently produced Netflix's "Stranger Things," as well as the science fiction film "Arrival."
Marc Munden will direct the project from a screenplay of "A Quiet Place," writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. An original draft of the script was written by Greg Weidman and Geoff Tock, with revisions of Jack Thorne. eOne will also fund the film.
The log line of the science fiction project is being kept secret.
"We have loved this project for a long time and we wait patiently until we find the right actor, whom we undoubtedly find in the incredibly talented Mahershala Ali," said Nick Meyer, eOne's film president, in a statement. "The cast is clearly shaping well and is supported by a creative team with a proven track record and the ability to tell a story that will resonate with audiences around the world."
Ali won an Academy Award for supporting actor for his portrayal of Dr. Don Shirley in "Green Book." He earned the same honor two years ago for "Moonlight" as a drug dealer.
Munden won three BAFTA awards for television with credits in "National Treasure," "Utopia," and "Electric Dreams." He recently directed "The Secret Garden" for HeyDay Films and Studio Canal, which is currently in post-production.
Recent Weidman and Tock credits include the TV series "Zoo" and "Limitless". Thorne wrote the Tony Award-winning play "Harry Potter and the Curseed Child" and the films "Wonder" and "The Secret Garden".
Ali is represented by WME, Anonymous Content and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern. Munden is represented by the WME and the Independent Talent Group. Beck and Woods are represented by ICM Partners and Anonymous Content. Weidman and Tock are represented by WME and Grandview. Thorne is represented by UTA and Casarotto Ramsay & Associates.
