Hidden within the lunar Beresheet probe of Israel, currently en route to the Moon, is a huge archive documenting the achievements of mankind.
The collection of images, text and symbols is the first part of a project to build a "Lunar Library" and part of a major effort to create an Earth space archive.
According to the Arch Mission Foundation (AMF), the library contains 30 million pages of human history covering a wide range of subjects, languages and time periods, all stored in a DVD-sized file made up of 25 nickel discs , each with only 40 microns of thickness. An 84-page document that AMF provided to Gizmodo showed categories of subjects in the time capsule, including aerospace, math, women's studies, humor, and criminology.

The first four layers contain over 60,000 analogue page images of books, photos, illustrations and documents, AMF explained. Among the items included, there will be a copy of The World Factbook.
When Gizmodo asked why the full list of content was not being released, AMF told the news agency:
Instead of relying on problematic curations of material, we want to include the full extent and diversity of registered human knowledge and culture, and one record of the life and civilization of planet Earth. "
There will be more discs sent to the Moon in the coming years, including in partnership with Astrobotic next year.

The Beresheet probe was launched by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and could reach the Moon on April 11. The probe and its time capsule will remain on the Moon indefinitely.
The Moon seems important for various country space programs. China, for example, recently became the first country to successfully land a probe on the other side of the moon when the Chang & 4; and 4 module hit the lunar surface on January 2.
