What the trip from NASA to the Red Planet aims to discover

NThe wing landed on Mars for the first time in six years on a mission designed to extract more information about the Red Planet.

The latest probe from the US space agency, InSight, landed on the planet at 5:55 pm (UK time), having traveled for six months and 300 million kilometers.

On an extremely complicated landing, the lander dropped from 12,300mph to 5mph, the equivalent of human jogging speed, in just seven minutes after reaching the atmosphere of Mars. The mission follows in the footsteps of the Curiosity rover, which arrived in 2012, but the $ 1 billion US-Europe joint mission will open up new paths – literally and metaphorically.

Here is what you need to know about the historical mission.
