Sucking your baby's dummy before giving it is good for your health

Parents who suck their son's dummy to clean it may be giving it untold benefits to health, scientists have revealed.

Most of the germ-phobics were scowling at the sight of their parents picking up dirty chiquérricos from the floor, putting them in their mouths and passing them on to the young.

But the researchers said that the habit can actually transfer healthy microorganisms to the children.

One study found that children who receive the pacifier have fewer antibodies linked to asthma, food allergies and dust, according to a study.

They had lower levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE), an antibody related to allergic responses in the body.

High levels of IgE typically indicate a greater risk of allergies and allergic asthma, said lead author Eliane Abou-Jaoude.

The study, conducted by the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, interviewed 128 mothers about their parental habits.

More than half (58%) said their child currently uses a doll, and 12% of parents said they sucked the doll to clean it.

Co-author Edward Zoratti said: "We found that parents' pacifier sucking was linked to repressed IgE levels starting around 10 months, and continued for 18 months.

"More research is needed, but we believe the effect may be due to the transfer of health promoting microbes from the parents' mouth.

"It is unclear whether the lower IgE production observed among these children continues in later years."

The researchers warned that the study, which was presented at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Association of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) in Seattle, required more research.

Dr. Abou-Jaoude said that although he indicated an association between sucking pacifier and children with lower levels of IgE, this does not necessarily mean that the practice itself causes the lower levels.
