Mom shocked to discover her daughter's birthday piercing for Claire's costs: £ 68

One mother was shocked to discover the price of her daughter's piercing on Claire, which she had made as a birthday present.

Joanna Lovell thought it would cost in the range of 20 to 30 pounds Jasmine, who was six years old, pierced her ears – but cost £ 68.

She admits she was "naive" about the price and did no research.

But by the time she discovered how much it would cost for the earrings, Jasmine chose that she was ashamed to ask for a cheaper option.

Hull Live reporter Joanna Lovell said Jasmine loves her new gold earrings but says she would have chosen a cheaper option if she had been better informed.

She says prices have not been clearly marked and is sharing her story "in the hope of helping another parent not make the same mistake."

Jasmine is happy with her newly pierced ears

The story of Joanna:

"My daughter wanted to have her ears pierced for a while now and by the time she turned six, I finally gave in and said she could do them.

My reasoning was that many of her friends had their ears pierced, I was much younger when my mother had my piercing and I think she's old enough to care for them now.

So, on her birthday this week, I took my animated little girl to Claire's Accessories at Princes Quay in Hull.

I choose Claire's because they advertise themselves as the top specialists in ear piercing in the world. and have been drilling for 40 years.

I'll start by being totally honest – I did not research the price before we went into the store.

Ingenuously or not, I expected it to cost somewhere around 20 to 30 pounds for a child's ears to crack. In retrospect, clearly I should have looked at this first.

I asked the assistant if we needed to make an appointment and were told not to, and was then handed the plate of earrings to choose from, while the assistant pierced the ears of two other children.

Options on the frame include all different colors and types including 18k gold, 9k gold, stainless steel and titanium earrings – to name a few. There were no prices beside them.

At this point Jasmine was looking to get a little nervous, so I admit that my focus was on her, not the price.

They gave us no guidance, but 18-carat gold looked good to me, so when it came our turn Jasmine pointed to the ones she wanted. She went for the 3mm 18CT gold crystal.

The wizard invited Jasmine to sit down, did the paper work and removed the earrings and showed us. To be fair, at this point she told me that they were £ 68.

I thought I'd misheard her.

"£ 68?" I said. "Yes," she replied.

I could tell she could see that I was shocked, but due to the fact that she did not tell me about any cheaper options, I mistakenly assumed that the prices of all earrings should have been a similar price.

The store offers many different choices of earrings that come in varying prices

At this point there was no turning back. We had already made the choice.

I took off my coat, my daughter thrilled and sat on my knee, ready, so I found myself muttering "alright."

It would have been so embarrassing to ask if there was anything cheaper.

I had gone for the 18 carat gold because I realized they are the best on the list, as I did not want anything cheap in their ears – but I would have been open to knowing about other options.

Before I knew it, the earrings were in her ears and I was lighter. I must say she loves you.

It's only after I looked online and I can see the piercing prices at the beginning of Claire's Accessories from just £ 15 – so I feel stolen that there are, in fact, much more reasonable options available that were not pointed out.

It would have been helpful if the options were explained to us – but obviously it's my fault for not checking first.

If I were given the prices I probably would not have gone for the cheaper £ 15 stainless steel option – but instead of 18CT gold at £ 68 I could have gone for 24CT gold plated at £ 30.

I asked for opinions asking people to guess how much the piercing costs on children and most people I spoke with say about 25 pounds, so I am sharing this in the hope of helping another parent not to make the same mistake I made. .

Claire's accessories – it would be really helpful to have the prices on the picture of earrings so that the parents can make an informed choice.

Or, at the very least, it would be helpful for the staff to not only deliver the advice, but go through the choices and prices with the parents first.

I can not think of anything else in life that you buy that is not clearly marked with a price. Disagree. "
