Etihad Airways passengers had to disembark at Manchester airport

The passengers were evacuated from an airplane at Manchester airport after a technical problem occurred in the air just after takeoff.

Etihad Airways flight EY22 to Abu Dhabi left Manchester at 19:28 GMT, but looped before returning to the airport 30 minutes later.

One passenger claimed on Facebook that there was a small fire in the back of the plane.

The airport confirmed that the fire engines had found the plane, but no one was injured.

A spokesman said: "The flight returned to the airport. The fire engines found the plane according to normal procedure."

Passenger Graham Ecclestone wrote on Facebook: "It took off. Ten minutes after emergency landing in Manchester.

"The plane caught a small fire behind. On safe ground, the fire engines watch."

The airline only confirmed that there was "a technical problem".
