The eighth generation of the Volkswagen Passat was launched in the summer of 2014, and now, in the fifth year of life, it was time to upgrade. Due to decent sales in Europe, it was not worth waiting for serious changes of restyling, which was confirmed by the presentation closed in Hamburg. The family changed with restraint and period. The most significant metamorphosis occurred with electronics.

At the seminar, dedicated to the upgraded car, the Germans did not bring a sedan, it could only be seen on the screen. On average, in Europe, no more than a third of all passports are made up of three volumes. But in Hamburg, three wagons exposed, since the variant in Germany accounts for 90% of sales. In Russia, the situation is reversed: in 2018, 1939 sedans and 512 trucks were sold, including 321 Alltrack.
Exterior and interior have changed minimally. Particular attention is given to the electronic updating of the Germans. Multimedia Passat enhanced by a new panel and a line of new generation MIB3 main drives. The display with digital devices became slightly smaller (11.7 inches diagonally against the previous 12.3), but the resolution was increased, the image became more contrast, the speed was increased.
The central screen also became more contrasting and more responsive, the capabilities of the multimedia system were expanded. In the presentation, we show only the best device in Discovery Pro. It seems simpler than the more expensive "head" of the new Touareg, but because of its capabilities is not inferior. The modem itself allows the Passat to be online constantly, distribute Wi-Fi and support branded services on the Volkswagen We platform. For example, non-cash parking payment. The highlight of the auxiliary electronics complex under the general name IQ.Drive – Travel Assist system. In fact, it is an adaptive cruise control with a wide range of powers, able to operate across the speed range. In this case, the Germans gave the Passat the first wheel of the world with a capacitive sensor, which with a fundamentally different precision determines the presence of hands in the rim. It is said that, thanks to the new camera, the Passat is more correctly maintained in the band: it does not crawl from line to line, but clearly follows the center.
The Russian line of engines, in addition to the two-liter turbodiesel 1.4 TSI and 1.8 TSI are preserved, is not similar to European, so information on the latter is merely a reference. To the previous "fours" were added 1.5 TSI, 2.0 TSI, 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI, a diesel 2.0 TDI evo (150 hp) with a diesel particulate filter and a nitrogen oxides selective neutralizer. This fruit of the development of the line of motors EA 288 already is installed in Audi A6, only longitudinally. Passat is the first cross application of the deformed version. All engines comply with Euro 6d-Temp environmental standards.
The Passat GTE Hybrid with a 1.4 TSI petrol engine (156 hp) and a 115 horsepower electric motor received a more spacious battery: 13 kWh instead of 9.9. The power reserve in the electric coil has increased from 55 to 70. In addition, the set of operating modes of the plant has changed, but the general sense has been preserved: in addition to the purely electric and hybrid movement, there is an algorithm to maintain battery power on a certain level. In Russia, the GTE will not be sold.
The relation of prices and equipment allows the Passat to be between the premium segment and the most democratic technology. In Europe this is paying off: 183,249 cars sold in 2018 have given Volkswagen the lead among all class D cars, including premium cars. If we talk about sedans, then only the Mercedes-Benz C-class is best sold, but there is no equal sales between the Passat Wagon.
In Asia, we are in the middle class united. The leader is traditionally the Camry (33,700 cars), followed by Optima (20,833), Sonata (6847) closes the top three. As already mentioned above, all versions of the Passat are 2451 cars sold in 2018. The inner circle includes class C (2655) and Mondeo (2203). There is no reason to believe that with the upgrade, Passat will fundamentally improve its position.
In Europe, orders for the eighth and a half Passat will be made in May, and live cars in the halls will not appear until August. The car will arrive in Russia at best in 2020, and it is not yet known with which engines. It is indecent to talk about prices. I assume that they at least regain VAT and inflation.
