Scientists have discovered ozone layers above the polar regions of Venus. An international group of astronomers made a breakthrough by reviewing the archival documents of the Venera Express mission. The study confirms the circulation patterns of the planet's atmosphere. Scientists believe this discovery will make adjustments to existing criteria for the habitability of exoplanets. For the first time, signs of the presence of the ozone layer on Venus were noticed in 2011, but the cases of its registration were of short duration, and the layer itself was very thin and located at high altitude. In a new study, scientists reanalyzed data from the SPICAV instrument, which consisted of infrared and ultraviolet spectrometers installed aboard the Venera Express interplanetary mission, collected from 2006 to 2014.

Scientists have been able to detect permanent and dense ozone layers located above the polar regions of Venus above 50 ° at an altitude of about 70 kilometers above the planet's surface in the upper layer of clouds where the pressure is similar to the ozone layers in the atmospheres of Mars and Earth.

According to the researchers, the volumetric fraction of ozone on Venus was 10 to 20 particles per billion (0.1 to 0.5 units of Dobson). For comparison, the ozone concentration in Earth's atmosphere is a thousand times greater.

It is true that scientists do not even expect to add Venus to the list of exoplanets. It is said that not only the presence of the ozone layer, but also its concentration affects the viability of the planet. In the solar system, only Earth meets this criterion.
