Sony's mobile division is once again changing its strategy, making a logical bet on multimedia features. In the case of the Sony Xperia 10 – on the screen of the 21: 9 film format and return to the old "square" style. Is that enough to catch the middle segment? We say in our review
The Xperia 10 is the first-born of Sony's new smartphone wave, for which the most distinctive black screen is chosen, the best format for CinemaScope, the most popular movie format. No, this is not the original 2.35: 1 and not 2.39: 1, but a slightly more familiar format 21: 9 (ie 2.33: 1), which tried to introduce Philips into consumer electronics, creating TVs with format similar. In the market, they lasted three years. It has lasted much longer – and still lasts – this format in the world of monitors, but Sony is not interested in widescreen, by itself, but in cinematographic potential. And the experience of Philips' failure (which did not wait for the mass distribution of content in the original format) was ignored by the Japanese.
The 21: 9 screen format has received, among others, the Sony Xperia 10 middle class smartphone that came to us for the test, and flagship Xperia 1, which comes to market only in the summer. Such a display allows not only declare a unique opportunity to watch a movie in the format in which it is (mostly) removed, but also to make a narrow case, the most comfortable for the tightening.
The Sony Xperia 10 is interesting not only for the screen shape but also for the return to the roots: here and the traditional front panel design without a cutout or hole for the front panel and a "brick-like" case – with a side scanner of impressions. Hi gold times Xperia Z is obvious. It's non-standard and out of date that Sony bets, since the Xperia 10 does not stand out: Qualcomm Snapdragon 630, dual camera (13 + 5 Mp) without zoom, LCD screen of six inches, battery not very spacious (2870 mAh) … Maybe Sony's new hope for success in the middle segment has some unusual trumps up its sleeve?

Retro shift – so you can characterize the look of the Sony Xperia 10. For the past two years, the Japanese have carefully erased the usual brick image with its edges and flat panels in front and back – and all of a sudden it's back to 2016. That way , the same fingerprint scanner on the side panel. No "fringe" (admittedly, Sony has not yielded to this fashion offset at all), the minimal folds of the edges of the back panel – it does not try to hide the actual thickness of the device, the mini jack in place. The only thing that gives the Xperia 10 a modern smartphone is the dual camera module. In this regard, Sony also maintained a conservative position for a long time, but still surrendered last year.
It seems Sony Xperia 10, in the end, at least unusual. The word "fresh" compared to the returned design code of the past seems not to be very suitable, but in the general context this is how it happens. Sony's smartphones should not be confused with any other, and the "dozen" continues this tradition with calm. In addition, this "you will not confuse" any negative connotations. Yes, Sony may not like someone's approach, but in general, the Japanese can not deny their sense of style.
However, certain aesthetic issues are caused by the combination of almost complete lack of a chin and side edges around the screen with a very impressive space – the manufacturer claims that the engineers had to leave such a gap because there was no more room for put multiple printed circuit board connections and so on. Of course, but for example, in Xperia 1 announced simultaneously with the "ten", there are no such gaps, and there are much fewer cables and printed circuit boards, so this explanation does not eliminate the problems.
The following color variations of the Sony Xperia 10 are available: dark blue (as we are testing), black, silver and pink. Design materials – metal for the back panel and side faces, tempered glass (Gorilla Glass 5) forward. Coverage should be admitted, it is non-marking, it is not necessary to constantly dance around a smartphone with a cloth or immediately wrap it in the arms of a case. Only the front panel is covered with prints and stains – the oleophobic coating on the Xperia 10, unfortunately, is far from ideal. Of the unmistakable advantages, I notice how smartphone is comfortable to hold – elongated and thin, it fits very nicely in the palm of your hand, and there is every reason to suppose that it is in some.
Sony would not be herself if she did not do something special in terms of controls. It's true that we were not expecting the proprietary camera's shutter release button, but instead an additional fingerprint scanner took up additional space on the right edge. What is unusual about such a decision is that it is just a scanner, not combined with the power switch, as it was before. The power and volume buttons (the bottom is also responsible for lowering the shutter) are up and down, respectively – and have changed their normal position on most other branded smartphones. As a result, the face looks more symmetrical, but it becomes inconvenient to use the volume control – you have to move your finger down – it is inconvenient to do so.
At the top we see a mini jack, at the bottom there is a Type-C USB port and a monaural speaker tucked under the right grille. The SIM card slot and memory card traditionally opens without the aid of a pin lock – and again traditionally sending the device for a reboot, it is only necessary to remove the slot from the case. And regardless of whether or not there is a SIM card.
The fingerprint scanner, it should be admitted, works great. Despite the small area, it did not take long to rewrite the print in a week and a half of testing – the capacitive sensor responded stably. The only point is to carefully monitor the cleaning of the scanner and the finger: the sensor is very sensitive to any contamination.
The Sony Xperia 10 runs on the Android operating system 9.0 Pie with a proprietary shell known for example in the Sony Xperia XZ3, only without a number of chips associated with the OLED display used there: in Xperia 10 there is neither the Always-On feature Display nor the ability to turn the display just by looking at it. But there's a basic set of Sony applications, high-quality design, competent integration of proprietary and "android" functions – this is one of the most accurate and nicely organized smartphones today, while having your own face and not overlapping with Google THE.
Of the functions that, however, unexpectedly moved from the XZ3, I would observe the Side Sense – the side panel added there in connection with the use of a curved display. Here the screen is completely flat, but there is a side panel that provides quick access to the applications, settings, and contacts of your choice. In addition, it is implemented much better than in the flagship – it is difficult to call it by chance, since the sensitivity of the area in which the Side Sense is activated is fine-tuned. From the unnecessary function that many Xperia XZ3 users immediately shut down after meeting, the Side Sense has turned into an optional, but in principle, useful sticker that at least does not interfere.
There is also a single chip added in the new generation of the Xperia widescreen – the screen can be split into two parts. The multi-screening itself is no longer a novelty for Android smartphones, but is very well implemented in the format: the windows are conveniently adjusted in size, due to the proportion that should be placed on the screen with maximum comfort. They should – because at the time of testing the function simply did not work.
Sony solves the problem of staggering external applications in a simple way – taking everything out of the usual format (19: 9) with the status bar and the navigation bar. But it does not always work – some applications on the extended screen seem so.

In Sony Xperia XZ3 (and Xperia 1, released earlier this summer), an OLED display was first installed in the history of Sony's mobile division. But this has not yet become a general trend, which would have grown for middle-class models. Despite the obvious multimedia orientation of the Xperia 10, the screen of this smartphone stretched to the 21: 9 format is equipped with an LCD (IPS) matrix. But frankly, saving on the screen, limiting itself to a non-standard ratio, the Japanese company did not: the 6-inch screen received Full HD + resolution (2520 × 1080 pixels), which gives a density of 457 pixels per inch . The image is very detailed, it is simply impossible to see the pixelization.
The screen format allows you to watch many movies in the format in which they were filmed – this is true. There is a large but that has already turned off the oxygen for the same idea with televisions, although in theory they are much more suitable for viewing original content than mobile devices. Finding the originals is not so easy – in streaming or iTunes services (and pirated sources) almost all content has been reformatted to 16: 9, CinemaScope has never been recognized as the BluRay Ultra HD standard. And the problems in finding content for an elongated display are followed by another – whether you stretch a full screen image on today's smartphone with a 19: 9 or 19.5: 9 screen does not lose much information on the edges when it extends to 21: 9 The eye is sore. Watching any online video on the Xperia 10 is associated with mandatory monitoring of two particularly large black bars on the sides. This is the "special experience."
The Xperia 10 oleophobic coating, as I noted above, does not shine, otherwise it is a standard sandwich for a normal-level normal smartphone – there is a polarizing filter and a multisensory coating that responds to 10 simultaneous taps. The viewing angles are free.
When instrumental measurements show that the Xperia 10 provides a very good brightness limit – 519 cd / m2. That's enough to keep the information on the screen readable on a sunny day, but there's no reason to trust the excellent picture quality – frankly there is not enough contrast, and this is normal for an LCD monitor.
The average level of contrast is 1374: 1. Support for HDR, unfortunately, is not indicated, any special experience in the field of quality, not the image format, the Xperia 10 can not offer.
In the screen settings, you can change the color, brightness and white balance, as well as adjust the automatic inclusion of night mode. I measured the display color of the Xperia 10 with two of the available presets: standard and bright.
Средняя гамма в стандартном режиме цветовой гаммы составляет 2.10, что не так уж далеко от нормы. РК а с с с с Цветовая температура завышена, но не так сильно, как можно было бы ожидать от смартфона Sony, – она колеблется от 7 500 до 8 500 К. Кажется, времена, когда японцы совершенно осознанно делали оттенки на своих экранах запредельно холодными, все-таки миновали. Вот и славно. Цветовая гамма не расширена – охват примерно соответствует по площади sRGB, но слегка смещен. Среднее отклонение DeltaE по расширенной палитре Color Checker (оттенки серого + широкий набор цветовых оттенков) составляет 5.27 при предельно допустимой норме в 3. Результат не худший, но далекий от идеала.
При активации режима повышенной яркости ситуация с цветопередачей парадоксальным образом практически не меняется. Можно даже сказать, что все показатели колеблются в районе арифметической погрешности. Гамма оказывается равной 2.04 при схожем поведении кривых, цветовая температура остается в тех же границах, среднее отклонение DeltaE по Color Checker составляет 6.10, цветовой охват такой же, как в стандартном режиме.
Стоит признать, что настроен дисплей Sony Xperia 10 средне – ничего страшного, но совсем не то, чего ждешь от нарочито «кинематографического» гаджета.
Зато в плане звучания Sony Xperia 10 очень неплох. Сигнал подается достаточной мощности, чтобы проблем со слышимостью не возникало даже в метро, причем не на максимальной громкости. При беспроводной передаче данных поддерживаются как общеизвестный профиль aptX HD, так и фирменный LDAC – при использовании поддерживающих его наушников смартфон способен обеспечить очень богатое и детализированное звучание, мало в чем уступающее "проводному."
При этом через внешние динамики Xperia 10 не может предложить даже стереозвучания – одно из главных преимуществ флагманских Xperia (они звучат лучше всех конкурентов) не перетекло в младшую модель. Динамик громкий, но одинокий.
