On the night of November 26, 2018, NASA announced the successful landing of the InSight spacecraft on the surface of Mars. After entering the atmosphere of Mars at a speed of about 20,000 km / h, space agency scientists had to wait "six minutes of horror," while InSight caught the planet's atmosphere.
The successful landing took place in the planned place without detours – at 21:54, the time of Kiev in the area of the highland volcanic Elysiy. After a soft landing, the device transmitted to Earth information about the successful completion of the task.
During a decrease in atmosphere, the InSight unit warmed to a temperature of 1500 degrees Celsius – the device was saved from ultra-high temperatures by a thick protective wrap.
The mission of the device is designed to study the internal structure and composition of Mars – for this InSight is equipped with a seismograph. The program cost the space agency $ 480 million, and the mission itself is projected for 720 days – InSight will now study the internal structure of Mars, perform the planet's first seismological observations, and measure the heat flow from the depths of Mars.
To study the subsurface layer of the Red Planet, the device is equipped with a special drill that will make the largest well 5 meters deep.
