My MIX 3 - Xiaomi Smartphone Slider Review

Frameless canvases have become one of the major innovations in smartphones in recent years. But most of them have a small nuance – a neckline in which cameras, a speaker and additional sensors are placed. Some manufacturers have limited functionality, leaving, for example, only the camera. But fundamentally nothing has changed, because the neckline still remained. There were also options when on one side of the screen there was a wider frame in which the camera and other sensors were positioned, but in that case the frameless smartphone could only be called conditionally. The Xiaomi company is one of the few who tried to get out of this vicious circle by launching the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 slider, whose structure is actually very thin, and there is no screen clipping. Today, in the review, we will meet with him.

Lineup

The number of different models of the company at some point can be confusing, and the rate of appearance of new models is greater than that of many brands. It has reached the point where there could be several flagship models, not to mention a few options for a separate flagship. The main flagship of the Xiaomi line remains the Mi 8, which has a more expensive version with a transparent case and more accessible with the prefix Lite.

The manufacturer started the Mi MIX line as experimental, if you remember, the first Mi MIX was with a "thick" edge, and was also distinguished by a piezo-dynamic speaker. But it was followed by Mi MIX 2 and 2s, whose concept did not change globally, and features and design were just being finalized. Therefore, the Mi MIX 3 has to some extent returned the status to the ruler, since the device received the sliding mechanism and a very thin display frame for the first time in the maker's model range.

Package and first impressions

The box with this smartphone includes everything you need and some additional accessories. Unfortunately, only the device itself came to us for testing, even without a box or a charger. For the end customer, of course, the whole set will be delivered, namely: a power supply with support for quick charging and a removable cable, a clip, a standard headphone adapter, a carrying case, an induction charging station (also with support for fast loading) and documentation.

Getting started with Mi MIX 3 is not much different from the rest of the company's smartphones. Everything works according to expectations. In part, it resembles the Mi 8, which has a similar back. But the characteristics of the case do not give rest at first, because long ago conventional monoblocks appear in the market, and here we have a slider.

Design and Usability

At first glance, we faced another big smartphone with an elongated screen and a shiny body. But that's a slider. The display unit can be slightly lowered, thus opening the front cameras. So ended up doing without a clipping the screen. And for whom he would not fall into the hands, the first comment is this: "This is really a frameless smartphone." And the second stage of device knowledge becomes a slider.

In our case, the mechanism initially had a small slack and could tap lightly if the display unit were moved from one side to the other even without effort. This is probably a design feature. We do not know how reliable this mechanism will be, but it can be assumed that over time it can become loose and clogged.

If you open it only to activate the front cameras (yes, there are two) and / or answer the call, then most of the time it will be a fairly familiar smartphone, with glass in the front, a ceramic "back" and a base between them. All of this is brilliant and will probably be enclosed by a cover. The fall of this smartphone is contraindicated in all respects, because the pottery and the glass break, and the frame doubles at the same time. And this is not to mention the fact that the smartphone itself can collapse into two parts. And you can loosen it when intercepting, which will have to be done quite often, because the body is quite large: 157.89 × 74.69 × 8.46 mm, weight – 218 grams. The color options are limited to three: black, blue and green. In this case, the smartphone will always be brilliant from all sides.

As already mentioned, in the hands it looks like Mi 8. Of the controls, it is worth noting an additional button on the left side to call the voice assistant (in China is a corporate voice assistant, and in the global versions of the device is Google Assistant) . Double pressing the button you can turn on the camera quickly. Tasks can be reassigned, but the choice of opportunities is small. Even in management, you can refuse the virtual navigation buttons and replace them with gestures. A little accustomed, you can handle this, but the reaction speed and animation of what is happening is a little lower than that of the standard control model. For quick and convenient unlocking of the device, there is only one fingerprint scanner on the back, the front cameras do not serve to recognize the face of the owner. It is true that the scanner works fast and well, it is enough.

According to subjective impressions, the smartphone was a success. If you do not think about the possible damage of the slider then you liked the design and the sensations of use. Of course, hiding the smartphone in the case, will not be so beautiful, but it will actually be safer. Those users who are not afraid of little scratches and do not drop their smartphones, should especially like this experience.

Display

Almost the entire front panel is assigned to the screen. It occupies 93% of the space in the front and its diagonal is of 6,39 inches. The resolution is not the highest, but it was enough – 2340 × 1080 pixels (403 ppi). Ratio 19.5: 9. The corners of the screen are rounded and slightly repeat the shape of the case. The frames are very small (except that the background is a bit longer than the rest). This all sounds, of course, impressive.

Under the glass is the AMOLED matrix manufactured by Samsung. Calibration in the default settings shows a saturated image. I would not say it is uncomfortable, just by direct comparison to a more accurate screen, you can see that there is more saturation. But in this case in the settings there are items that allow you to fix it. There is also a night mode that suppresses shades of blue for more comfort at night. In general, the image is good and, for such a large screen, it is important. The only thing that spinning will be obvious is AMOLED, the colors change remarkably. But using a smartphone, I rarely look at the screen at such an angle.

The maximum background light of 425 cd / m² with this matrix is enough not to worry about reflections on a sunny day. At the same time, the light sensor behaves well. The sensor accurately recognizes up to 10 rings, but there is a problem. Due to the small pictures and the big screen, there are random touches. And regardless of whether a hand hold the phone or two. It may be a matter of time, but during the smartphone test, I often found such ringtones. The rest of the screen and the photo as.

Sound

As the keynote speaker, only one works. Spoken, unfortunately, is not involved in playing media and games. That would be, in my opinion, useful. The sound quality is very good. Subjectively, other flagships sound better, but the Mi MIX 3 sound is not too bad. Only the loudspeaker is not the loudest and most balanced, but the smartphone is not as expensive as the best players on the market. In any case, with the adapter you can connect your favorite headphones, and the wireless one will be reproduced in a predictable way.

The speaker is located on the second half of the slider, while the cutout is just above the screen. The dust from the pockets easily falls on the speaker and can clog it. Truth and clean it quite easy. With the conversational features of the smartphone, everything is in order.

Performance and Software

Mi MAX 3 is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor we already know with the Adreno 630 video. In the basic version that came to the test, there were 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, but there are other more expensive ones that can include 8 GB of RAM twice as much disk memory. A separate modification of the Forbidden City is equipped with 10 GB, and the drive will have a capacity of 256 GB. Of course, both SIM cards support LTE, and the smartphone itself was one of the first to support 5G (only the European versions will be released in the first quarter of 2019). There is also the standard AC Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth 5.0. In general, the standard kit for high-end smartphones from different manufacturers.

Of course, it works out quickly. Today it is difficult to find some really difficult task for such an "iron". Even despite the fact that I have the basic version, there is virtually nothing to complain about. Is that the device with 8GB of RAM may still delay something in the open background, but with six you can not say that there are tangible problems.

The test smartphone came with Android 9 (the October security patch) and the proprietary launcher MIUI 10.0.3.0. The system is also fast, as expected from a high-end device. But some animations can be faster. Once again, only very demanding users will pay attention to this, and it is unlikely that the average buyer will find fault.

Autonomy

In a fairly thin case, such as for a slider, the engineers still managed to put in not the smallest battery. Its capacity was 3200 mAh. This was enough for 8.5 hours on the PCMark autonomy test (unfortunately there is no screen capture; at the end of the test, the program crashed, but for the remaining battery charge and screen activity time it was possible to make a conclusion definitive). In actual use, I had enough battery for 5-6 hours of screen operation per day, with a bit of residue. Games and a large number of videos via LTE connection, of course, can significantly reduce this time.

Since full memory did not arrive in our office, we were unable to verify the loading time. Again, note that your smartphone supports fast charging according to the Qualcomm QuickCharge 4.0 standard and can be restored at the induction stations.

My Account

Among the company's smartphones and most of its competitors, the Mi MIX 3 was distinguished not only by the body, but also by the number of cameras. It is impossible to surprise someone with a dual head unit, but two cameras for the selfi are still rare. The main package consists of two 12 megapixel cameras and a pair of 24 sensors and a 2 megapixel sensor at the front. We already know most of these cameras in the manufacturer's smartphone ratings.

The set of possibilities is almost identical. The main "trick" of the camera is in AI mode, where the camera must understand what is in the frame now and how to improve the image using that information. This is mainly working with saturation, contrast and lighting. We can leave the HDR and AI enabled, their work does not have a negative effect on the photos and this combination is suitable for both daytime and nighttime illumination. In the latter case, you can turn on night mode, which will take a little more time per frame, but the photo will have less highlights and more detail. In any case, the automatic mode is so good, and the photos are obtained from the first attempt.

Video can be recorded at a maximum of 4K and video in slow motion, even at a speed of 960 frames / s. Again, nothing new dramatic compared to what other top-of-the-line Xiaomi smartphones have shown.

Example of video recording at 4K resolution:

Example of Slow Motion:

Front cameras are also good even in difficult conditions. When you open the slider, it immediately starts the application and activates the selfie mode. Again, it is not true that an extra sensor is required for depth maneuvers, while other models have one. But even here the result is not worse, though not much better.

We also familiarized ourselves with the camera application. There are not fundamentally new things, with the same logic and good speed.

Pros: Unusual body and nice appearance; frameless display without cropping and image quality; sound; performance; equipment; fingerprint scanner; cameras

Cons: The reliability of the design and its durability is questionable, there are no stereo speakers

Conclusion: Slider – a rarity among modern smartphones. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 was able to combine an unusual format, top features and a truly frameless screen without clipping. Unfortunately, this has attracted the typical problems of a slider whose mechanism is slightly in doubt. But for those users who are not afraid of such problems and want to get something that really stands out from the crowd of all-in-one smartphones, there is now a good candidate for that role.
