The Ebola virus continues to spread

GENEVA / KAMPALA. The life-threatening Ebola virus continues to spread in Congo, central Africa, and neighboring countries are alarmed. In Uganda, 1,600 helpers are being vaccinated at health centers along the border, Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng said at the weekend.

Suspicious cases of ebola have already been reported in southern Sudan, Uganda and even Yemen, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). But in no case was it really an Ebola infection.

Nearly 12 million people have been tested at border posts in Congo for signs of Ebola. There were 14 suspected cases, in one of which the virus had been detected.

According to the Congolese Ministry of Health, from the beginning of August until the end of October, 250 people were infected with certainty and another 35 probably with the Ebola virus. 81 patients had recovered, 180 patients had died.

WHO is alarmed by the growing number of cases in Congo. The head of WHO, Adhanom Ghebreyesus, travels to Congo this week. He is also accompanied by the head of the UN peacekeeping mission, Jean-Pierre Lacroix. (AP)
