Sleeping in the light, like watching TV, is not healthy. It is known. But a study on women has now if artificial light during sleep can also lead to obesity.
Researchers at Research Triangle Park in North Carolina now have one in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine A study published with women found that artificial light can make you fat at night and even lead to obesity ("obesity").
Obesity often causes chronic diseases
About 23% of women are obese, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Overweight and obesity are crucial factors for chronic diseases such as diabetes and cancer.
American researchers see obesity not only in an unhealthy diet and lack of exercise: "An artificial night light at night (ALAN) can contribute to the obesity pandemic."
Years of research with surprising results: ALAN can gain weight!
Over a period of five years, scientists at the National Institutes of Health examined approximately 44,000 women between the ages of 35 and 74. Over the past two years, they have evaluated the data: the results show that watching TV and artificial light while sleeping in women is associated with an increased risk of weight gain and obesity.
Weight gain at five pounds
Compared with participants in completely dark rooms, sleep with ALAN gained five pounds and up to ten percent of the value of BMI. Previous animal studies also show that nighttime exposure may have a negative effect on the day-night rhythm.
Interruption of day-night rhythm
The so-called "clock genes" were suppressed in the study by permanent light irradiation and disrupted the "24-hour circadian rhythm." As a result, rodents also changed feeding behavior – the result was an increase in weight.
Consequences: stress hormones and more time to eat
Also ALAN's environment, such as street lights and neon signs, led to a suppression of sleep hormone "melatonin." For example, the stress hormone "glucocorticoids" was produced for this purpose.
"Shorter sleep also increases wake-up time, leaving more time to eat or increase energy," said Dale P. Sandler.
Obesity and obesity prevent the darkness
To avoid overweight and obesity, women should therefore be alert to healthy lifestyle habits, such as a diet rich in vitamins, in addition to being physically active. These components can lead to a low level of stress.
The TV and bedside lamp, as well as the smartphone, should be displayed before bed. A sleep as quiet as possible, thanks to a dark room is the best prerequisite to start the next day in recovery and physical conditioning.
Why you should no longer sleep on the right side
Not only the duration of sleep but also the sleeping position is relevant to a healthy life. This has now been proven by experts. Therefore, it is best to stay on the left side of the body: healthy through proper sleep.
