  • Online retailer Brack.ch is increasing its staff.

  • About twice as many employees work in logistics.

  • Because of a possible mini-block, Brack.ch is preparing for another race.

According to Roland Brack, the corona crisis accelerated growth in online retail in one to two years. As a result, online retailer Brack nearly doubled its logistics team. With the increase in the number of cases and a possible second “mini lockdown”, he is already preparing for busy moments.

“Consequently, we are happy that the situation has improved somewhat in the summer,” Roland Brack said in an interview with CH Media newspapers published on Monday. Brack owns the Competec Group, which includes the Brack.ch online store. “While requests remained at a significantly higher level than before the pandemic, it gave us time to get used to a new normal.”

It’s not a good feeling

Online retailers are among the winners of the corona crisis. Not necessarily a good feeling for Brack, as he admits in the interview. “Being a winner in a crisis doesn’t make you particularly proud.” The company may have reacted quickly to the new situation. “But we were lucky to be active in online commerce, which is why we were not affected by the store’s closure.”

As orders exploded during the spring blockade, Brack nearly doubled the logistics workforce from 250 to about 450 employees. However, 10 to 15 percent of existing people were no longer allowed to work because they belonged to the risk group, according to Brack. “It was violent in such a short time.”

Shift work

According to Brack, team safety is a big issue. With a total of more than 300 employees at the Willisau logistics center, Lucerne, cases are almost inevitable. “The question is no longer how it can be avoided, but how we deal with it.”

So, they work in shifts. On the one hand, separate the staff so that not everyone gets sick. At the same time, however, because the number of orders has exploded. Since the end of the summer holidays, a general mask requirement applies to logistics.

Only four cases

The online store has counted a total of four boxes so far. With a thousand employees it is “sensationally small”. “Our people were protected and not just because the company was interested. Many of us have been motivated by the fact that they can contribute to the country’s supply during an emergency, ”said Brack.
