New study: Yoga reduces anxiety among innocent people


Sara Torstensson, psychiatric nurse in outpatient psychiatric care Skaraborg Mariestad Hospital and colleague Petter Malmström, psychiatric nurse in psychosocial care Skaraborg Hospital Falköping has written a scientific article that has received international attention since being adopted by the British Guardian.

The article is about the research work they participated in during their specialization in education at the University of West Trollhättan, led by their supervisor, Professor Nóra Kerekes.

"The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of yoga on the health profile of inmates for a period of ten weeks," says Sara Torstensson and Petter Malmström in a press release.

The 152 persons in the study are admitted to Swedish institutions with a safety rating of not more than (1) and second highest (2). They were divided into two groups; a group that practiced yoga and a control group that performed any non-yoga physical activity. Participants were asked to complete self-assessment scales regarding psychic distress and psychiatric symptoms before and after the trial period.

The result showed that all forms of physical activity improved mental health and were marked by reduced hostility, suspicion, social excitement and depressive symptoms.

The new finding was that yoga was found to specifically reduce paranoia, compulsive and physical conditions caused by external stresses. In practice, yoga reduced the following anxiety-inducing symptoms: fear of self-esteem, memory disorders, difficulty making decisions, difficulty concentrating, obsessions, depression and fear of fears.

The work of the study led Sara Torstensson and Petter Malmström to reflect on methods of treatment in specialized psychiatry that can positively affect the patient's health without including drugs,

The task of the Pediatric Nurse is not just to share drugs that unfortunately still have many difficult side effects. The psychiatric care center is about adapting to care, and then many treatments or approaches are needed because yoga can be an excellent choice, says Sara Torstensson and Petter Malmström.
