At the outset, Croatia wanted to stand alone, but after the Slovenian agreement, it was involved.
By today's publication of the implementing regulation in the Official Journal of the EU, the European Commission protected the extra virgin olive oil from Istria with a protected designation of origin. The request for protection of olive oil was shared by Slovenia and Croatia together.
Protection with a protected designation of origin means that both cultivation and olive processing are carried out in the specified geographical area of Istria, Slovenia and Croatia, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food.

The procedure for the protection of this olive oil began in 2016, when the Commission published in the official European Gazette the role of Croatia in the registration of Istrian extra virgin olive oil with a protected designation of origin.
Slovenia has opposed this role because, since 2007, the European Commission has protected extra virgin olive oil from Slovenian Istria with a protected designation of origin and registration of the Croatian product could mislead consumers as to the true origin of the product.
Brussels acknowledged Slovenia's objection and called on the two countries to negotiate.
During the negotiations, the Slovenian and Croatian olive groves agreed to prepare a joint application for the protection of extra-virgin olive oil produced in Slovenian and Croatian Istria. Thus, on the basis of an agreement between the producers of Slovenian and Croatian olive oil, they sent the role of Slovenia and Croatia to the European Commission for the joint protection of extra virgin olive oil called Istria.

Istra oil is protected
In September 2018, the European Commission again published a summary of this application in the Official Journal of the European Union. Since it did not receive any comments on the proposed application within three months, it published the register of extra virgin olive oil named "Istra" in the European Register of Protected Designations of Origin and Protected Geographical Indications.
Olive oil Istria is the 26th Slovenian product protected by the European Commission and, in addition to the Istrian ham, another product protected with Croatia.
