In the first phase of the investigation, the European Commission found that German automotive manufacturers BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen have violated competition rules by agreeing to greener vehicle systems. Brussels will await the response of the companies and will take the final decision.

In 2017 the Commission took the German marks BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen – Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche, t. i. round five. They should restrict competition in technology to reduce harmful emissions.

Restrictions on the use of adblue in SCR catalysts in diesel cars should be agreed between 2006 and 2014. In the years 2009 to 2014, they should be involved in maintaining the introduction of t. i. Filters for Ott particle filters (OPF) in gasoline cars.

They face billions of dollars

"Consequently, European consumers may not have the opportunity to buy cars with the best technology available. Manufacturers now have the opportunity to respond to our findings." said the European Commissioner for Competitiveness Margrethe Vestager. If the decision is maintained, companies will face billions of penalties.

Companies had technology but restricted access to customers

Manufacturers should negotiate in the case of two systems – between 2006 and 2014, they must agree to restrictions on the use of adblue in SCR catalysts in diesel cars. In the years 2009 to 2014, they should be involved in maintaining the introduction of t. i. Filters for Ott particle filters (OPF) in gasoline cars.

The companies, therefore, had technology, but all restricted the access of customers to greener vehicles, the commission said.

They reported from Daimler that they did not expect penalties. "Daimler is at an early stage and has fully cooperated with the European Commission as the main witness and therefore expects no penalties in this matter."

At Volkswagen, they announced, among other things, that they would study the commission's decision, but could comment on it.
