The number of people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis is increasing

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease – the immune system fights against the body.

About 8,000 patients with multiple sclerosis live in Slovakia. "The number of them is increasing, which can be caused by early diagnosis and especially by prolonging patients' lives," said Jarmila Fajnorová, president of the Slovak Society of Scleroris Multiplex (SZSM), for TASR.

Diffuse sclerosis

The disease affects the central nervous system, the brain and the spinal cord. It belongs to autoimmune diseases, that is, those in which the immune system fights against the body. In particular, it attacks the nerve fibers and damages them.

When someone is embarrassing, they are said to have sclerosis. Neurologist Branislav Brezhny, however, explains that there is no sclerosis like sclerosis. If the disease affects the cerebral cortex, responsible for mental function, it is evident the clinical manifestation of a person with vascular sclerosis. "Multiple sclerosis is also referred to as multiple sclerosis, because the deposits of the disease are many and are scattered throughout the brain," explained TASR Brezhny.

From the earliest symptoms to the development of the clinical picture of the disease, it can take several years. Often the first symptom is marked fatigue, weakness and tingling of limbs. "The patient usually does not pay attention and does not consult the doctor because he does not consider this condition alarming," says the neurologist, adding that visual impairment, urinary disorders, balance disorders and walking traps appear in patients.

The cause of the disease is unknown

"The multiplex of sclerosis has varied and often fleeting expressions. That is why the diagnosis may not be easy and may confuse the head with an experienced neurologist," Brezhny said, but the more serious problem is the limitation of timing and fatigue. "Patients simply do not move, they do not go in. Even during a short exercise, they suddenly weaken and have to relax," Fajnor said. For more severe mobility disorders, patients use walking sticks, French bars, walkers and wheelchairs. The impact on the soft steering wheel makes this more difficult.

Experts still do not know the exact cause of the disease. The factor of infection can be virus infections. "There are more than 100 viruses diagnosed after infection," says Brezhny. Experts predict that the environment and increased hygiene standards of the population, stress, nutritional habits or allergies may be affected. vitamin D deficiency and smoking, especially in young women, "added Brežný.

Occurrence is more frequent in women

"Multiplex sclerosis does not occur from a tribe to a tribe, although in families where the disease has already occurred, it occurs more frequently than in the rest of the population," says neurologist, who appears in adolescents and twenties, about three times as many women according to SZSM, multiple sclerosis is the most common neurological disorder leading to disability.

As a major breakthrough in the treatment and diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, the neurologist considers the discovery of new imaging methods and their introduction into medical practice. "Magnetic resonance imaging is now the only imaging method that can confirm the damage to the packaging of nerve fibers. We also map the effectiveness of the treatment," says Brezhny.

Progress in research has brought about the emergence of a new biological treatment that multiple multiple sclerosis may contain. "In the past, the patient was diagnosed with skeletal deficiency, and women were not advised to have children, but today the patient with the disease has a full life, is able to care for the family and the disability has changed for more than 15 years," SZSM officials said.

The most important is the diet

Treatment with modern medicines is financially demanding but is fully covered by health insurance companies in Slovakia. Approximately 2,000 patients are treated in this country and by 2016, health insurance companies spent more than 44 million euros. "But the patient is paying for vitamin and mitigating supplements, such as muscle relaxants or pain," the union said.

"In the Multiple Sclerosis Treatment Centers, we would like to have an outpatient clinic at the bedside, in addition to the neurological outpatient clinic, where the relapse of the disease, that is, its sudden crisis and the clinical worsening of the condition, can be treated immediately. We would like full-time care in a place that works in some Western European countries, "said Fajnor.

Stretching with other patients is part of psychotherapy

From the Office of Labor, Social Affairs and Family, the patient can receive contributions for various compensatory aids, renovating the apartment for barriers or buying a car necessary for individual transportation, depending on the extent of their disability. In the social insurance company, he / she can apply for a disability pension.

SZSM covers 25 clubs in Slovakia. For their members and others, they mainly organize educational activities and workshops of various physical activities with practical demonstrations. Also reconditioning remains. "The meeting of patients with multiple sclerosis is part of psychotherapy," added Fajnor. An integral part of SZSM's annual activities was the vision, a competitive examination of the skills and abilities of people with disabilities as part of SZSM's annual activities. more.
