Scientists at Birmingham, Bristol and Colorado Boulder universities are developing a new generation of data storage and processing devices, using a new science called skyrmionics. Skyrmics focuses on using the properties of nanometer structures on magnetic sheets called skyrmiony. These belong to the area of ​​spintronics, they have a size of a nanometer and a magnetic spin similar to a small vortex.

Scientists believe that they could be used for much denser data storage than existing technologies depend on modern computers. The shape of the skyrmions allows the data encoded in them to be transmitted with much less performance than can be achieved today. However, the arrangement of these new structures in order to store and transmit data has been a problem.

In a new study published in the journal Physics of NatureA team of researchers from British theorists and American experimental scientists have demonstrated a way to combine multiple skyrmions into structures called "skyrmion packages" and contain multiple skyrmions, allowing more information to be stored in an even more restricted space. Thus, he modeled his technology using computer simulations and successfully tested under real liquid crystal conditions.

"It's extremely exciting to see this technology work in liquid crystals because it opens new possibilities for progress in areas such as screens, sensors or even solar cells." said study co-author Dr. David Foster of the University of Bristol.
