At first glance, no change. Instead, the question arises – to whom is this car designed? What was the novelty in everything?
All of these are hypothetical questions with a virtual tone until you sit behind the wheel of a car that looks civil but under the drieme predator of the hood, we were given a chance to tame and control.
The SEAT brand from Spain has long been a sporting profile. Templates called Cupra were and are actually "cut" sportily. What can you do to make the most of your sporting brand and enjoy the experience with sports cars and racing specials? At SEAT-e they decided on a new brand called CUPRA. The first "civil" model is Ateca. The car of the latter category of the increasingly popular SUV category. The brand was also prepared by e_Racer, an electric race car with a power of 500 kW (680 hp), but it is another league and out of our interest to try a sharp and therefore sharp Atecu.7
The high-performance SUV symbolizes the beginning of the new era and is also the right vehicle for CUPRA to enter the market. It has become the rule that premium car brands dominate this segment of cars. But the introduction of the CUPRA Ateca upset the old habits. This has caused people's attention to shifting from the usual, conventional, and regular view of the sport's current view, but it does not need luxury to create a sense of uniqueness.
I realized that, shortly before, I was able to sit behind the wheel of a powerful SUV, which hides a herd of 300 horses under the hood. The power of 221 kW is a good load to test the determination, the ability and the driving ability of everyone behind the wheel.
At first glance, it's a pretty normal car. But well under the guise of "common" is the accusation of uniqueness. CUPRA Ateca has a striking exterior design, elegant interior and high performance. This combination is a great investment in the car's capabilities. Under the hood of the CUPRA, the Ateca is one of the most technologically advanced engines on the market – a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with direct fuel injection TSI 2.0, achieving a remarkable power of 221 kW (300 hp) and maximum torque of 400 Nm. Combined with the DSG dual-clutch 7-speed gearbox and the four-wheel drive system, the 4Drive offers the Aficio CUPRA with excellent steering performance and sporty character.
That is at least the materials we have at our disposal. Of course, this just strengthened our taste in trying out what the car really can do. The area around Barcelona is unique for several test trips. There are several sections straight and fast, but also a complete twist that can not just manipulate your hands. The other parts of the body will come to your own, according to the intensity you are mixing with the body fluids and the contents of some organs.
The first part led through dirty, well-twisted streamers. The mistake of beauty was that a couple of buses slowed us down for a moment, advancing cautiously and slowly in the twists and turns of the territory. But it did not take long, hung up, and then came the right riding orgy!
When you see the CUPRA Ateca in front of you, you will understand the dizzying rhythm of flamenco on the narrow, ever-moving road and gas and brake at a fast pace, like the castanets. Why, for whom and why was CUPRA really created? I already know who she's meant for. For enthusiastic motorists enthusiasts. For sports-based and determined drivers, adrenaline enthusiasts, dynamics and a wonderful feeling of power under the hood.
We have all experienced this and had the opportunity to experience the first dozens of miles. The relatively narrow and crowded roads not only verified the character of the car, but also the drivers. Many sections were literally "heart-hearted" and less experienced pilots would rather have a faster seat. Still – the dynamics of the car is really great. Almost unbelievable for a car that weighs ready to ride a couple of passengers around 1700 kg. The empty weight is 1540 pounds.
This impressive power of 221 kW (300 hp) ranges from 5,300 to 6,500 rpm and impressive maximum torque of 400 Nm. It is available in a wide range of speeds from 2,000 to 5,200 per minute. This potential power allows the CUPRA Ateca to reach a top speed of 247 km / h and acceleration from zero to 100 km / h in 5.2 seconds. The newly developed 7-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox also contributes to this excellent acceleration. It allows a faster, more precise and elegant reduction than the 6-speed manual gearbox.
I felt we had tried the car properly and using a jetty … But we really did not know what was waiting for us. After a brief pause and instructions, we chose a relatively short road circuit, excluding any other traffic. The path, dangling on both sides with sloping and steep protrusions, with soft, even pointed curves, an almost ideal surface, but also quite broken, symbolized everything we could try: acceleration, car handling, braking efficiency, and mechanical adhesion. . The CUPRA Ateca has an independent suspension of all wheels in the McPherson struts and the multi-link rear hinges as the initial model. However, the gear is complemented by the DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) with electronic characteristics control. The driver can change the chassis configuration as needed in various modes: Normal, Sport, Individual, Snow, Off-road and of course CUPRA. In CUPRA mode, in addition to the engine characteristics, the sound of the exhaust system and the DCC adaptive damping damper are adjusted for maximum driving dynamics. By adjusting the individual modes, the character of the entire car will always change. We were more interested in this sport and, of course, CUPRA.
In Barcelona, this period of occasional drizzle was not added to the room by the pilots, but the organizers were not wrinkled. After the first round, you want to experience more, and then again and again … Thanks to a four-way sports exhaust system, the engine sound matches your driving performance and accentuates the ride's drama.
The highlight was the start of this road speed test using the automatic CUPRA Launch Control mode for maximum acceleration with a solid start. What I'm going to tell you, sitting first in the passenger seat – I felt like breaking my head! The feel of the rock pulled from the sling – this is the right thing to do with the acceleration that the CUPRA Ateca was able to show. After a seat change behind the left comes the focus – left foot on the brake, correct speed above 4000 per minute and start! The car literally "sank" into the rear wheels and fired forward. The acceleration value informed by the manufacturer within 5 seconds from zero to 100 is not just the manufacturer's marketing role, but the real value! We always stayed below 5.5-6 seconds, then started to climb a bit and began to grumble. "Dragon, Muscle, Beast" – blushing her head and saying just – gorgeous! An experience that will take a few more hours. If I did not, I would not believe it.
One more look: Brakes. For high performance, the engineers modified the braking system. Sports SUVs have brakes with a diameter greater than 340 mm at the front and 310 mm at the rear, increasing the efficiency of the brakes. On request, a Performance Pack with Brembo brakes is equipped with 370 mm diameter discs and black stops.
Later, we return "to the base." To the hotel where we are waiting for a little rest and then going to the product presentation of the model. There is much to explain, to justify. Why this, right now, what entry model and what that means. I understood this during the tour. I see that SEAT and the CUPRA brand hope that this first model will attract new customers looking for a unique car between the mass segment and the premium premium segment. Nor do I seek your enthusiasm and expectation. CUPRA Ateca has the following – to wrap, mix cards, attract attention and seduce buyers.
Perhaps this option does not last long, increasingly stringent emission regulations unbelievably and inexpensively print CO₂ values as well as consumption and, of course, power. Well, while there is a chance, you have to be able to choose a superman in which the inexperienced driver's heart is gone.
Beware, CUPRA Ateca is addictive, but not for everyone! The combination of sports chassis and progressive steering ensure the excellent handling of the car. Despite driving on all four wheels and a perfectly tuned chassis, it is in the hands of an inexperienced driver a bit like a grenade. That is why I do not recommend that this bole on the road be occupied by riders with little experience. But those who have mileage and powerful "machines" are the two-sided car. Quiet, adaptable, practical for both the family and the individual. For normal riding, work, fun. Well, this can be in two stages.
