Two suppliers receive the degree of food hygiene cut in & # 39; C & # 39; after 45 people get sick

SINGAPORE (Reuters) – Two caterers had their food grade reduced to "C" after 45 people became ill in separate incidents of food poisoning.

The incidents involved Chilli Api Catering and Pro * 3 Institutional Catering, which were downgraded on June 18 and June 17, respectively.

Chilli Api had attended officials of Jurong Polyclinic on December 18, 2018, the Ministry of Health (MS) and the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said in a joint response to the CNA's questions on Saturday (June 22).

Twenty-four polyclinic employees who consumed the food developed symptoms of gastroenteritis between December 18 and December 19. None of them were hospitalized.

Authorities conducted a joint inspection of the buffet kitchen and found several lapses of hygiene.

"Although the exact causative agent of the outbreak can not be determined, fecal coliforms were detected in environmental and food samples, indicating inadequate personal and environmental hygiene and food preparation practices that could have contributed to the outbreak," said MS and the SFA.

"The SFA also found hygiene failures such as lack of site maintenance and exhaust."

Chilli Api has since corrected the lapses, officials said.

The incident involving Pro * 3 Institutional Catering took place at the National Junior College Boarding School, where 21 people developed gastroenteritis symptoms between March 9 and 10 of this year.

None of them were hospitalized.

A joint inspection of the house kitchen has detected hygiene failures, such as the lack of cleanliness at the premises, MOH and SFA said.

CNA got in touch with Pro * 3 Institutional Catering and Chilli Api Catering to comment. They are among the three suppliers who have had their food hygiene rating lowered so far this month due to cases of food poisoning.

In early June, SFA said in a statement on its Web site that Delizio Catering had its food grade reduced to "C" after 18 people fell ill at a Christmas party.

In May, Elsie's Kitchen hygiene grade was also downgraded to a "C" after an incident of food poisoning involving dozens of people earlier in the year.

In April, authorities investigated an outbreak of gastroenteritis at Zhenghua Primary School, after 230 people became ill with symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting.
