Steven Gerrard has qualified Jermain Defoe as a dream for his Rangers midfield – and claims the veteran striker is a tremendous winner.

The boss of the Ibrox introduced the former England striker Defoe with 24 minutes remaining from Wednesday's showdown with Dundee, and watched as he placed the seal in a 4-0 thumping.

The Light Blues dazzled with three goals in the opening 24 minutes against Jim McIntyre's players but they failed to light Ibrox so brightly after the interval as they allowed the pace to fall.

That all changed in the final minute, however, as Defoe rushed for a Ryan Jack pass, shrugged off Ryan McGowan before hitting an unstoppable drive past Seng Dieng, the goalkeeper of Dark Blues.

It was Rangers' 36th-year goal after only six matches and three substitute appearances.

Gerrard, who played alongside Defoe on 40 occasions for England, said his Ibrox team-mates quickly realized the value of the Bournemouth star.

He said RangersTV: "That's why we brought him to score goals.

"It does not matter if Jermain plays 90 minutes or 60 or 30, we want him to be a goal threat, and his move is fantastic.

"I used to love playing with him. He is a dream for a midfielder because his move tells him where to play the ball.

"It was a great Ryan pass and a great final, and he will continue to do so if we provide the service for him."

Gers has scored 14 goals in his last three games after following 5-0 consecutive hammers of Kilmarnock and Hamilton with his last fight against the Taysiders.

But while Gerrard He was frustrated by his team's failure to put his foot on the ground after the break, he was pleased to see them hoarding a clean fifth sheet.

"We've always said that this will be our basis and that the only way for you to succeed is if you're solid on the back," he explained.

"But we gave Dundee a few chances we should not have. In the end, they had some breakaways and some efforts in the goal.

"In the second half we should be playing in their half and actually sustaining the attacks and continuing to pass and killing them with the ball.

"We never, but it's another clean sheet, another strong win, but there were two sides of us tonight and I'm leaving a little disappointed, believe it or not.

"But Jermain Defoe made me feel so much better because that's an incredible finale in the end."
