South Sudan frees rebel leader spokesman, South African adviser – official

JUBA: South Sudan on Friday released the spokesman for rebel leader Riek Machar and a South African prisoner, a Reuters witness and senior government official said a nearly five-year civil war would end.

In order to strengthen the agreement signed in September, President Salva Kiir was assured on Wednesday by William Endley, a retired Colonel of South Africa, Machar's adviser and Machar's spokesman James Gatdet.

The Reuters witness in the jail where they were held saw that the two men should be asked to go up and wear their civilian clothes after being taken out of their cell.

"We are here to implement the President's mandate, their release is part of the peace process, and now they are free," said Michael Chiangjiek, interior minister, after paperwork confirming his release.

"Gatdet will go to Khartoum, and William Johan will go to South Africa."

Endley was sentenced to death in February to try to stop the government, while Gatdet was sentenced to death in the same month for betrayal and government interference.
