Fire starts at 2 shophouses in Geylang


SINGAPORE (Reuters) – A fire described as "massive" by eyewitnesses exploded in two stores in Geylang on Wednesday night (June 19), sending smoke in the air.

The Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) said in a Facebook post around 9 pm that it was on site conducting firefighting operations.

The force confirmed around 22:45 that the fire involved the contents of two shophouses in units 67 and 69 in Lorong 14 Geylang.

Earlier he had said that the fire was at 35 Lorong 14 Geylang.

"SCDF deployed 12 emergency vehicles and about 70 firefighters for the incident," he said.

"At the height of operations, three hand jets and an air monitor were used to mitigate the fire," he added, saying the fire was under control.

There were no reported injuries.

A witness, who said he could see the flames of Aljunied, described the fire as "massive."

Another CNA reader said he heard a "blast" at his apartment in Kallang.

"I heard a loud explosion from my living room and I saw the big bonfire on my porch," he said, adding that the smoke could still be seen around 9.40 p.m.

Online videos showed plumes of thick smoke rising from a building. Sirens could be heard and part of a street was isolated.

In an update around 11:30 pm, the SCDF wrote in a Facebook post that the fire had been extinguished after "almost three hours of firefighting operations."
