A potentially fatal type of pneumonia is at least three times more common than previously thought – Jun 11, 2019

A study at the University of Otago tested almost all patients with Kiwi pneumonia for Legionnaire's Disease over a year.

It has picked up nearly three times as many cases across the country as they are usually diagnosed.

There were particularly high rates in Hawkes Bay and Canterbury.

Lead researcher Professor David Murdoch says Legionnaire is considered a rather rare disease – but this is clearly not the case.

He hopes that the study will lead to preventive measures to prevent the spread of disease in the soil.
