The patient's residence in Lorong 6 Geylang is within an active dengue cluster .

As of 17 June, 108 cases of dengue were recorded in the cluster of Geylang Road. Since the notification of this cluster on April 26, the NEA has detected and destroyed 64 mosquito breeding habitats.

Between January and March of this year, about 60% of the breeding habitats detected in Singapore were found in residential facilities and the number of such breeding cases remains high.

Although most patients recover from dengue infection, a small number may develop complications that can lead to death, especially in the case of elderly patients with concomitant medical conditions.

As of June 15, 5,184 cases of dengue fever were recorded, representing a four-fold increase over the same period in 2018, when there were 1,242 cases.

The number of reported weekly cases of dengue also more than quadrupled in the last three months.

In their statement, the Ministry of Health and the NEA noted: "We are now in the hottest months of June through October, and we can expect the number of cases to increase further."

While certain geographic clusters, such as in Woodlands, Geylang, Jalan Lembah Thomson and Chai Chee, accounted for most of the increase in the number of dengue cases, there was a general upward trend in Singapore.

"Dengue transmission, therefore, is not localized and everyone needs to be alert to the threat," the agencies said.

From January to March, NEA conducted about 224,000 inspections and discovered about 2,900 occurrences of mosquito breeding habitats.
