The importance of awareness about stroke – Jornal de USP

This week, Professor Octávio Pontes Neto talks about October 29, the date of the World Stroke Stroke (Stroke) Day.

Pontes Neto explains the importance of the campaigns to fight the Stroke in the Country and how the population can become aware about the Cerebral Vascular Accident. "Stroke is the second leading cause of death in Brazil, and within the main medical emergency, if you compare stroke with myocardial infarction, severe polyarthritis, respiratory arrest, or circulatory shock, stroke is the least recognized intuitively as urgency by the population. "

The professor said that patients who have symptoms of stroke are lying for hours with weakness on one side of the body, difficulty speaking, mouth twisted, and relatives do not recognize that it is a medical emergency. The patient takes medicine for pressure, lies down and goes to sleep, thinking that the symptoms will improve.

"The stroke is urgent," says Pontes Neto. "Symptoms of one-sided weakness of the body, difficulty speaking and understanding, and loss of vision are reasons to quickly search the emergency service and call 192."

On November 10, at 8:00 p.m., in Praça XV de Novembro, in the center of Ribeirão Preto, there are activities to raise awareness of the population about Stroke. The Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto will be present. "Undergraduate students, academic leagues and health professionals will take anatomical pieces. They will also check blood pressure and blood glucose. The entire population is invited to understand what this disease is, how to prevent and treat stroke, "says Pontes Neto.
