Government does not renew with Meo service 118 nor launches contest – Observer

The government announced Wednesday that it has decided not to renew its contract with Meo (Altice) or launch a tender for a new universal provider of directory services and information service 118, following the recommendation made by regulator Anacom.

According to a statement by the Deputy Secretary of State and Communications, Alberto Sousa de Miranda, "the issue is that Anacom [Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações] have concluded that only 5% of the potential universe of subscribers are included in the database of that service and have therefore recommended the amendment of the Law of Electronic Communications to exclude this service from the scope of Universal Service.
