The study, led by a team from the University of Navarra and the University of Jaen in Spain, looked at the link between phenolic acids, including hydroxycinnamic and hydroxybenzoic acids, and breast cancer in 11,028 women.

During an average follow-up of nearly 12 years, the researchers found 101 cases of breast cancer among the women group.

All women completed a feeding questionnaire at the beginning of the study, saying how many times they ate 136 different food items.

Phenolic acid intake was calculated by comparing the food consumption data of the questionnaire with a database on the phenolic acid content of each food.

The researchers divided women into three groups according to phenolic acid intake.

The results showed that participants with the highest consumption of hydroxycinnamic acids (a natural type of phenolic acid) had a reduced risk of 62% of breast cancer compared to those with the lowest intake.

It has been found that chlorogenic acids, a type of hydroxycinnamic acid found in coffee, fruits and vegetables, have the strongest effect.

Women who consume most of this type of nutrient had a reduced risk of 65% breast cancer compared to those who consume less.

Commenting on the results, the researchers said, "The increased intake of hydroxycinnamic acids, especially chlorogenic acids – found in coffee, fruits and vegetables – was associated with a decreased risk of postmenopausal breast cancer."

They theorized that diet could possibly reduce inflammation of adipose tissue, oxidative stress that can damage tissue, or insulin resistance, but experts believe more research is needed to fully explore the connection.

"We have known for a long time that eating fruits and vegetables as part of a balanced diet can help reduce the risk of breast cancer by helping to maintain a healthy weight," explains Kotryna Temcinaite, research communications manager for Breast Cancer Care and Breast Cancer Now.

"Although this study helps suggest a potential mechanism behind this benefit, further research is needed to understand the effect that phenolic acids found in foods such as fruits, vegetables and coffee may have on the risk of breast cancer."

Dr. Temcinaite says that supporting more women to make healthy lifestyle changes will be key to preventing further breast cancers, but the small number of breast cancer cases in this study makes it difficult to draw solid conclusions about the potential role of acids phenolics in cancer prevention.

"More follow-up studies at more advanced ages, which also track any changes in participants' diets over time, are now needed to better understand this link.

"Meanwhile, although it is not advisable to drink too much coffee to try to reduce the risk of breast cancer, we encourage all women to eat lots of fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy and balanced diet.

"By taking steps to maintain a healthy weight, drink less alcohol and stay physically active, all women can help keep the risk of breast cancer as low as possible."
