DU30: The mistake of the founder of KAPA

Last Thursday, June 13, 2019, there were two large separate events that happened in the city of General Santos. The first was the so-called KAPA (Kabus Padatuon) Ministry International prayer rally led by its founder Pastor Joel Apolinario and the second was the distribution of land title certificates for land reform beneficiaries led by President Rodrigo Duterte.

The so-called prayer meeting was held at the Pedro Acharon sports complex in Barangay Calumpang, while the distribution of the title certificate was held at the Lagao gym. The designated PNP personnel in the city of General Santos were very busy ensuring the peace and order of the two separate events on the same day.

By noon, there were radio interviews with KAPA officials saying that there was already an agreement with President Duterte regarding the previous order to close the operation of the organization. There was circulated information that elected senators Bong Go and Ronald "Bato" of La Rosa facilitated the agreement.

In fact, Apolinario himself, in a telephone radio interview, said that President Duterte wanted to meet him in the city of Davao to discuss the controversy. He gave tips to his followers that all was well.

While the so-called prayer meeting was taking place with the thousands of KAPA supporters, Pastor Apolinario arrived in the area aboard a helicopter. He climbed dramatically onstage, an entrance his followers wanted him to see, to approach a huge crowd of supporters.

At four o'clock that afternoon, he loudly announced that Duterte was already giving them the approval to continue his (KAPA) operation. He said the president changed his mind in favor of KAPA. Such information attracted applause and applause from the crowd.

Aloud, using a very clear sound system, he chanted "victory cry" and "I love KAPA". He also repeatedly praised President Duterte and his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sarah Duterte-Carpio. He finished his speech by quoting a verse in the Bible.

He embarked back his new helicopter and left the area with his supporters full of happiness. All the members rejoiced, believing that everything was already well.

However, only a few minutes later or at five o'clock that afternoon, such rejoicing was unexpectedly abridged when he heard President Duterte's speech in a separate event that totally contradicted all the words uttered by Apollinaris. He reiterated his request to close KAPA saying: "Those who have already spent a lot of money on KAPA, I'm sorry. The operation will stop or should stop immediately. "

Duterte emphasized that those who will continue the KAPA operation will be arrested without bail. "All of you who are in KAPA, should your names appear in the newspapers, you should be aware that you will be arrested without bail," he said.

Duterete said it is impossible for Kapa to return 30% a month of the money invested by its donor-member. He noted that all banks, even the Central Bank and Bank of America, can only return from 3% to 4% a year.

Duterte recounted his experience while still a prosecutor in the city of Davao when he investigated investment frauds like the KAPA. So he stood firm in his previous order to close KAPA, saying he was involved in a fraudulent pyramid scheme that offsets old investors with money collected from new investors. This scheme can not be sustained and will eventually collapse.

In a heartfelt message, Duterte said, "You must listen to me. I'm a lawyer and I'm your president … Never go into KAPA. Do not be offended. If it's too good to be true, it must be fraud.

Duterte even criticized Apolinario for making a pyramid or pyramid scheme. "Pastor ka unya mangilad ka, bantay ka lang", Duterte emphatically warned Apolinario in vernacular.

In all, Duterte's strong warning against KAPA is a big slap in the face of Apolinario, who fooled his followers and believed that everything was already well. His act of overthrowing Duterte's names with his fabricated claims will lead to his own downfall.
