Xiaomi Mi 9: resources. Xiaomi Mi 9: review, price, camera, review

The Xiaomi Mi 9 is the secret weapon of the Chinese company to compete with the most important cell phones of the season in the category of high range.

The company does this for everything that is great with a device that has a very competitive price and great features that can make you choose that phone Samsung Galaxy S10 (or, consequently, Galaxy S10 Plus), O Huawei P30 Pro or the LG G8 ThinQ.

This company has grown by leaps and bounds, and although it is not yet officially available in the United States, many of its cell phones arrive in Mexico and other Latin American countries, as well as in Europe and in particular in Spain, where Xiaomi, if very popular.

I have been using this Xiaomi cell phone for two weeks – which includes the interface of the MIUI company itself – and I will talk about my experience.

Price and availability

The Xiaomi Mi 9 costs 449 euros in Spain for the 6GB version of RAM and 64GB of storage and 499 euros for the 128GB storage version. In Mexico, its price is 12,999 pesos for the version with 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. The phone is sold in some online stores in the United States, but not directly by the company.

Design: less bevel and no door for hearing aids

The Xiaomi Mi 9 has a beautiful glass back, but easy to soil, which this time incorporates a new triple camera that stands out a lot. When you have the phone in hand, its edges seem like a continuity of the device, something that allows for a good grip.

The phone has slightly curved sides, which end in aluminum edges, a detail that literally resembles the Mi 8 and other cell phones of the company. This device is a bit slippery when you have it on hand, though not as much as other phones we have already tried, like the LG G8 ThinQ.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 has a dual horn output and a USB type C charging port. Unfortunately, this phone does not have a headset port, and although it does not have a physical fingerprint sensor, it has one on the screen.

If we talk about physical buttons, it keeps the volume and energy on the right side and a button dedicated to Google Assistant on the left side. This last button can be configured with other predefined actions such as open Google Search, open the front camera, a recent application or activate the flash to use it as a flashlight.

With a 6.39-inch screen, the Xiaomi Mi 9 is slightly smaller than the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus or the iPhone XS Max and larger than the Huawei P30 and similar to the One Plus 6T, which are some of its direct rivals.

At the front, we find a screen with a few bevels, which only has the drop-shaped camera at the top, which allows you to have more space on the panel for better viewing of the overall content.

As you can see in these photos that we left below, the Mi 9 comes in a transparent version, although it is not sold in all the markets where it is available.

Performance of Xiaomi Mi 9

The Xiaomi Mi 9 has a Snapdragon 855 processor, such as the Galaxy S10 and other cell phones of the season. In my tests, the performance of the phone has been fluid and I had no problem reproducing, sending messages and generally performing the routine tasks with which we are accustomed.

I did not realize at any time that the device feels slow and when I have kept games from Asphalt 9 I did not feel any heat either. His fluency has been positive, I did not find apps opening slower – something that happened to me with Huawei P Smart 2019 – or that the phone crashes when I did multitasking.

This compares to other recent cell phones:

On-screen fingerprint sensor

The Xiaomi Mi 9 includes an on-screen fingerprint sensor, something new for this range of branded mobile phones. The company says that by putting it in this place and removing it from the back, it gained 25% speed on unlocking.

Although we are not lovers of fingerprint sensor on the screen, because the physical works well and is safe, the fact is that what incorporates Xiaomi is fast and effective. Lightly press the screen and you're done. In my tests, it did not give me errors or identification failures, as happened with other cell phones. Although, yes, this optical sensor will never allow you to unlock the phone with wet or dirty hands.

By the way, the company says that the sensor is not a problem if you suffer from dry hands or if there is a very bright light influencing the screen. Although if you have wet or damp, of course, it will not work very well, as in others such as the Huawei P30 Pro or the OnePlus 6T.

This sensor works in my opinion slightly better than the OnePlus 6T, because it seems faster, although in general the experience of putting your finger and wait for the reaction is similar in many phones with an optical sensor. However, the Huawei P30 Pro was a bit faster, in my experience.

This phone also features facial recognition, but by not incorporating specialized camera technology, it is not the safest method recommended by the company.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 is beautiful and shiny, but gets dirty easily.

The battery, as always, is one aspect we consider when evaluating a cell phone. You should take into consideration that this phone offers good behavior, and that despite its price, it works very well and competes with the best.

In my daily use at 7 am I was able to finish the day and get home with some battery although with the indicator in red and less than 10 percent over 9 pm If you are one of those who reviews your social networks every time , makes Stories and likes to listen to music, this will be the duration of this cell in average.

Other phones like the Galaxy S10 showed a similar result in our battery tests, although on a day-to-day basis they performed better. This phone has fast charging and wireless charging via the Qi standard, and is compatible with chargers of this type up to 20W and with cables up to 27W, which can reduce the amount of time you spend connected.
