A blood test allows to know the evolution of breast cancer – Mexico | World

Mexico.- A blood sample can help in the detection and treatment of breast cancer patients It is faster, less invasive and highly sensitive to detect biomarkers and determine disease progression, a specialist reported on Wednesday.

According to Horacio Astudillo de la Vega, Master of Science in the specialty in Genetics and Molecular Biology of the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute (CINVESTAV-IPN), The technique is known as liquid biopsy.

This is a blood biomarker test that works as a molecular diagnosis of breast cancer and is based on the waste that tumors release into the bloodstream.

What it does, explained the specialist in a newsletter, is to collect residues that are sometimes proteins, fragments of DNA that allow to establish a more accurate evaluation in the treatment.

Astudillo, who develops this technique in his laboratory, emphasized that the liquid biopsy benefits the diagnosis of the patient when the tumor or Metastases are found in highly compromised sites.

This is when punctures can not be obtained as in a normal biopsy because it requires a single blood collection instead of a tissue biopsy or a surgical procedure.

He said that if the tumor is, for example, near the heart, a blood biopsy is done where the fragmented material is located or the cells in the vascular space that release the tumors.

"These residues are collected, we separate them with special techniques and then measure the molecular aspects that allow us to make the prognosis, treatment and diagnosis of patients," said the specialist.

The biopsy was created as a parallel development to all the molecular diagnostics nanotechnological, biological and genomic that allow the study of cases located in difficult places and its importance is in the determination of some of the molecular profiles for attribution or decision in cancer treatments.

This procedure This can be done in highly specialized laboratories since it requires special technology and protocol for the analysis system, since it is a test with high technological standard.

And it makes it possible to obtain residual material that is scarce or difficult to obtain of what is circulating in the blood.

Astudillo de la Vega pointed out that the liquid biopsy is a good proposal for all types of tumors that makes this type of technology accessible to molecular diagnostics.

This is because, with the residue released by the cells through the bloodstream, "we can establish complementary tests in patients who do not have the original tumor with which the study was done."
