Teen driver survives spectacular crash at F3 Macau Grand Prix

MACAU (Reuters) – Teenage pilot Sophia Floersch underwent surgery on Monday due to a fractured spine following a spectacular airborne crash at the Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix.

The 17-year-old German tweeted Sunday: "I just wanted everyone to know that I'm OK, but I'm going to have surgery tomorrow (Monday) … Update soon."

Floersch has a broken spine, according to a medical report released by his team, Van Amersfoort Racing, based in the Netherlands.

"The whole world has seen what happened and we can only thank God that @ SofhiaFloersch escaped with relatively minor injuries," Van Amersfoort tweeted Racing. "Our thoughts go to the other people involved as well and we want a speedy recovery."

A video showed Floersch showing up to catch Japanese Tsuboi's car as he left the lane at high speed on a tight right turn on the fourth lap. Floersch's car passed a catch fence, struck a perimeter structure and fell to the ground with security officers immediately in place.

The incident caused an immediate red flag and a delay of more than an hour before the race was restarted.

In a statement released on social media, the FIA said that "the driver (Floersch) is aware and was subsequently taken to hospital for further evaluation." He added that Tsuboi and "two members of the media and a marshal also transferred to a local hospital in conscious state for further evaluation. "

Media reports said Tsuboi has low back pain.

FIA president Jean Todt posted a statement on Twitter saying the sports organizer was "mobilized to help those involved and analyze what happened.

"All my thoughts are with you @ SophiaFloersch and the others are injured. I wish you all a safe recovery.

Macau is an old Portuguese colony near Hong Kong.
