Former Secretary of State Harbers will be sworn in again this afternoon as a member of parliament for the VVD. Before joining the cabinet, he was already in the House of Representatives.
Harbers resigned on 21 May as Secretary of State for Immigration Affairs, because under his responsibility the House of Representatives was misinformed about reports of serious crimes by asylum seekers.
Harbers takes the place of Member of Parliament Malik Azmani, who goes to the European Parliament after the European elections.
The Harbers will be succeeded this afternoon by party colleague Ankie Broekers-Knol at the Ministry of Justice. She was Senate President until last week.
Broekers, 72, is the oldest state secretary ever named. She is a lawyer and has taught at the university for a long time.
The new Senate was installed this afternoon.
