Emergency order in Deventer to avoid football riots

The mayor of Deventer last night made an emergency appeal to prevent rival football supporters from fighting each other.

Mayor König says he has received signals that fans of FC Twente and Go Ahead Eagles agreed on the day before the match in Deventer.

The emergency order allowed police to check access roads for FC Twente fans. They were not allowed to enter the county. There were also extra cops and I was in the city center on Saturday night.

The order lasts until 9 o'clock in the morning and has no consequences for fans of the Go Ahead Eagles, the council says. The match between the two rivals in the second division is Sunday at 14:30.

Mayor König on the council's website on the measure: "Football is a beautiful sport and we want to keep it that way, so I do not allow supporters to visit in Deventer."
