During the cold seasonfrom november to february increase cases of people with allergies and the development of asthmaEspecially among children and young people, assured the head of the Allergy and Immunology Service of the Hospital of Specialties of the National Medical Center (CMN) La Raza, Maria do Rosário Canseco Raymundo.
He emphasized that the population should be attentive to the main allergy symptoms, which can be a history of asthma, such as repetitive sneezing, nasal obstruction, abundant mucus flow and pruritus in the eyes, ears and throat, in order to go in a timely manner with the family doctor to confirm the diagnosis and start treatment, besides controlling the infection pictures which can be more and more recurrent.
The specialist explained that asthma is characterized by chronic inflammation of the bronchi and symptoms such as shortness of breath, wheezing, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest and pain in the chest or abdomen; If these problems are not resolved, these problems will become increasingly frequent, difficult to control and even lead to death.
The World Health Organization estimates that in Mexico about 8.5 million people have asthma and in the world the number goes from 235 to 300 million, besides being a suffering that is increasing, so it is expected that in the next 20 years, 100 million people with this disease will be added.
At this station, there is an increase of about 20% of patients with allergic rhinitis, ie, they present an allergic reaction in the nasal mucosa and develop asthma.
Dr. Canseco Raymundo pointed out that there are several causes that cause allergy, including genetics, because it affects more first-born and people with a history of parents or family members who suffer from them; also due to environmental pollution, spending much of the day or living in small spaces, suffering respiratory tract infections, viral or phlegm type often and, most commonly in our country, dust mites, microscopic organisms that live in accumulated dust.
He explained that the first step in the diagnosis of allergy is to go to the family clinic in the presence of the indicated symptoms or risk factors; The doctor will conduct an interrogation and, in case of suspicion, he will send him to the hospital to perform several tests, either in the blood or on the skin.
In the Allergy and Immunology Service of the Specialty Hospital of La Raza National Medical Center, several contact tests are performed through skin microdroplets, which expose the patient to 40 or more types of substances that cause allergy. The reactions, through urticaria or some type of inflammation, are those that cause patient allergy and treatment, and recommendations will be offered to prevent its development and complications.
He added that in this service of CMN La Raza, which serves beneficiaries from northern Mexico City and various entities of the country, in 2017 performed more than 6,000 skin tests and awarded 7,361 treatments for allergy, while from January to September this year, they performed 4,852 tests and 5,182 treatments, numbers that will increase significantly with the arrival of the colder months of the year.
