A local Malaysian favorite, Penang asam laksa, has put the country on the world culinary map by being listed among the top 10 foods in the world.
In the list of the 50 Best Foods in the World prepared by the American TV network CNN, the popular noodles came in seventh place, beating the tone of Thailand’s yum goong and ice cream.
CNN has updated its choice of the best foods in the world with a list of the top 50 global delicacies. The selection includes flavors from around the world – a timely offer when travel is still limited due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
First is the Massaman curry. It may not be one of the country’s best-known culinary specialties, but the Thai dish is at the top of the list.
Take some chicken – if not beef or mutton – potatoes, onions and a curry paste made with cardamom, cinnamon, cumin, cloves, nutmeg and apple, and you will have the ingredients of a massaman curry.
This traditional Thai dish, with Muslim roots, contrasts with some of the country’s most famous dishes, such as the hot and sour tom yum soup with pepper and lemongrass, not to mention the legendary pad Thai.
Interestingly, France – a country famous for gastronomy – has no entry in the top ten. The country appears on the list for the first time in 21st position, with its traditional croissant. Classic pastries are surpassed by hamburgers, American donuts, Portuguese custard tart and shish kebab. – AFP Relaxnews
