Manchester United are monitoring Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez ahead of a £ 300m summer reconstruction.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spent about half of that total during the closed season with Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire as he moved forward in reshaping the team around young, talented and hungry British players.

Meanwhile, Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez have been dispatched with experience, but Solskjaer, by his own admission, is suffering the short-term consequences of relying so much on younger players.

The Norwegian is expected to commit to his own policy by recruiting Mario Mandzukic as a short-term solution in January as he attempts to address a chronic lack of goals, but in the summer when he and the United hierarchy must focus their efforts again potential signature instead of the final article.

Spanish midfielder Saul certainly falls into the latter category, but it would help to resolve the lack of creativity in midfield, especially if Paul Pogba's long-term future is elsewhere.

The 24 year old would not be cheap, however. He signed a nine-year contract extension two years ago that contained a € 150 million release clause.

Saul is, according to the Daily Mail, on United's short transfer list, which also includes names like James Maddison, the 22-year-old Leicester star who has earned recognition from England since moving from Norwich 18 months ago.

In the short term, Solskjaer will remain dependent on names like Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard to provide ammunition for names like Marcus Rashford and has urged his most creative players to be braver on the ball before Sunday's clash with Liverpool.

"The training here is excellent and we are just hoping it will flourish," said Solskjaer.

‘You can see a lot of this, the defensive part, which is giving us a platform to play. This last part will come because we have players with that talent.

‘Young players may want to play safely, but you need to take risks in this club, but you cannot play safely.

One of my great philosophies is that you attack quickly. You want to win the ball in great positions to strike, but teams are back so quickly these days that you miss that transitional moment in one or two less positive passes. & # 39;
